The Dolphins placed starting left tackle Austin Jackson and backup tight end Adam Shaheen on the NFL’s COVID-19 list on Monday.
Shaheen is unvaccinated. He has said it’s a “personal choice” and that the NFL isn’t “going to strong-arm me into doing something for more freedom.”
Jackson’s vaccination status is not immediately known.
If Jackson were unable to play in the season-opener at New England on Sunday, offseason acquisition Greg Little would be a candidate to start. NFL Network reported Shaheen landed on the list as a result of a positive test, meaning he will miss the contest against the Patriots as he completes his league protocol-mandated quarantine.
Jackson was not having a very strong summer but was looking to find his first-round form. Little was available because he had struggled in Carolina after he was a second-round pick, but he’s appeared capable since his arrival.
Miami is deep at tight end, with Mike Gesicki, Durham Smythe, Hunter Long and Cethan Carter all on the roster.
Shaheen is a solid pass-catcher and blocker and arguably one of Miami’s most underrated players. Shaheen looked good on the field this summer, including standing out during joint workouts at Chicago, when facing his former team.
Shaheen’s Twitter bio includes the phrase, “Somewhere without a mask.”
