Miami keeps raising the game when it comes to the “turnover chain.”

The Hurricanes’ gaudy necklace, awarded to players for takeaways, made its 2019 debut Saturday in the rivalry game against the Florida Gators in Orlando.

With Florida driving early in the second quarter already up 7-3, quarterback Feleipe Franks coughed up the ball inside Miami’s 10-yard line. The Hurricanes’ Scott Patchan recovered the ball at the 7, bringing out the chain for the first time this year.

Now in Year 3, the turnover chain somehow seems to keep getting bigger. This year’s edition features a giant “U” logo connected to a charm that reads “305,” which is the area code for Miami.

Per the university, there are over 2,000 white sapphire stones in the “305” charm alone, and the chain took around three months to make.

The Hurricanes were ready for the turnover, providing an up-close look at the jewelry on their Twitter account.

Started under former head coach Mark Richt in 2017, the first chain was simply the Miami logo.

In 2018, the chain was a design of mascot Sebastian the Ibis.

Miami recorded another turnover later in the second quarter vs. Florida, setting up a field goal.

The Hurricanes, now led by former defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, seem poised to keep forcing turnovers this season, meaning we’ll see a lot of the new chain this fall.

But we’ll also being seeing a new jewelry celebration from Miami this season, apparently. After scoring a touchdown late in the second quarter, tight end Brevin Jordan became the first to rock what the Hurricanes are calling “touchdown rings.”

These full-hand rings spell out “Hurricanes” across the knuckles when put together.

We’ll have to see if this trend catches on across all of college football, as well.
