The Weeknd’s Blinding Lights named most streamed song of 2020 by Spotify… after he was controversially snubbed at the Grammys

Spotify released its annual year-in-review featuring the most played musicians, songs and albums from more than 320million listeners.

And The Weeknd’s song Blinding Lights topped the charts with nearly 1.6billion streams on the platform.

The Weeknd — who’s full name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye — was controversially snubbed by the Grammy Awards despite receiving a host of accolades for his fourth studio album, After Hours.

While Bad Bunny took the title for most streamed albums globally with his YHLQMDLG, The Weeknd came in second place.

Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding, Harry Styles’ Fine Line and Dua Lipa’s catalog Future Nostalgia rounded out the list. 

Tesfaye also earned a spot as one of the most streamed artists of the year following closely behind Drake and Bad Bunny.

Billie Eilish remained the most-streamed female artist, with Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande following closely behind.

‘The Grammys remain corrupt,’ he wrote last week upon hearing the news. ‘You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency.’ 

He added on Instagram: ‘Collaboratively planning a performance for weeks to not being invited? In my opinion zero nominations = you’re not invited!’

His friend and fellow Canadian, Drake, stood in support, followed by encouraging messages from Elton John, Charlie Puth and Halsey, to name a few. 

Abel has earned a total of three Grammy, and most recently won the Best Urban Contemporary Album award in 2017 for his album Starboy. 

He’ll soon see the bright lights of the biggest game of the year while headlining the Super Bowl LV halftime show in February at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida.
