Richard Gere says he is ‘deeply ashamed’ of the United States over the government’s rhetoric regarding immigrants as he blasted US President Donald Trump months after moving back to America after relocating to Spain for a year.

In late 2024, the 76-year-old acting legend and 43-year-old wife Alejandra Silva relocated their entire family to Spain after Trump’s election win, however, they returned to the US late last year after spending roughly a year living in Madrid.

Now, Gere – whose son Homer was recently featured in an explicit sex scene for Euphoria – spoke at a launch for his foundation in Berlin, Germany on Thursday.

Gere blasted Trump, 79, in a speech as the guest of honor at the joint migration initiative by the Hertie School Centre for Fundamental Rights and The Gere Foundation.

He said: ‘Did it ever cross your mind that America could sink to this level? Did you ever imagine that someone as crazy as this would become President of the United States and work to destroy it?’

Gere did not stop there as he went on to take aim at the US Government over immigration rhetoric.

The actor said: ‘Human history is, in many ways, the history of migration, of movement. It’s a story of people adapting, building, contributing, and dreaming. And yet, somehow, in today’s debates, we often speak about migrants, about refugees as if they were different from us.

‘I think the term I was actually given today, apparently, the US government is calling aliens. Aliens. That’s the latest. It had been vermin, now it’s aliens. I’m deeply ashamed of this, I want you to know.

‘They belong to another category of human beings, as if their hopes and fears and aspirations were somehow less legitimate than our own. The simple truth that we’re all connected by movement, by our own humanity, by journeys that have come before for us.’

Gere was also critical of Trump as he branded him a ‘maniac’ during an event with activist Thor Halvorssen at the Oslo Freedom Forum in Norway earlier this week.

He told the audience: ‘We’re living in the darkest moment that I’ve experienced on this planet.

‘How is this even possible? Because we went to sleep. We didn’t care. We didn’t vote. We didn’t really listen.’

Gere also put some of the blame on himself for not doing ‘enough work to skillfully convince people’ that it was ‘insane to elect this person as the president of the United States.’

He went on to say that on the very ‘first day, this guy dismantled almost everything that was good about the U.S. government and the US people.

‘We have to see the cues, this dictatorship of the monsters, how quickly it happens. We have to be vigilant.’

Meanwhile, during Gere and his wife’s brief time away from the US in April 2025, Silva told Daily Mail that the family’s relocation was not directly related to Trump’s election victory but she pointedly commented she felt ‘privileged’ to be able to ‘escape and go somewhere.’

Gere and Silva had sold their expansive Connecticut ranch before relocating to Silva’s native Spain, setting up home in Madrid with their sons Alexander, now seven, and James, now six.

Gere has been very active in his criticism of Trump and his administration for years.

‘We’re in a very dark place in America, where we have a bully, a thug, who’s the president of the United States. But it’s not just in the U.S., it’s everywhere,’ Gere said while accepting an International Goya Award in February 2025.

Gere and Silva first met on Italy’s idyllic Amalfi Coast in 2014 when both were navigating a divorce: Gere from Lowell, and Silva from her husband, Canadian businessman Govind Friedland with whom she has a son.

They were married in 2018 at a private ceremony at Gere’s estate in upstate New York and lived stateside until late 2024.

Amber Heard quietly quit Hollywood for Madrid in 2022 as she wanted to raise her daughter ‘away from all the noise.’

The actress sold her home in Yucca Valley, California, for $1.1million.

Eva Longoria, 51, and her husband José Bastón, 57, quit Los Angeles for Marbella after splitting more time between the two.

Penelope Cruz, 52, and Javier Bardem, 57, purchased a stunning residence also in Marbella back in 2023 as they returned to their home country to raise their children.
