Actress Raeden Greer claims she was fired from the hit HBO show True Detective after refusing to go topless for a strip club scene following pressure from director Cary Joji Fukunaga.
In an interview with The Daily Beast, Greer claimed going topless was not in her contract, and was reassured on multiple occasions that she would not have to go nude for her role as a stripper.
But when Greer refused to take off her clothes, the speaking role ended up going to an extra who was fine being nude but who had no prior acting experience.
‘Cary said to me at that moment, “Everybody on this show goes topless. All the women on the show go topless. Your character is a stripper, so you have to,”‘ Greer recalled Fukunaga telling her.

‘Cary said to me at that moment, ‘Everybody on this show goes topless. All the women on the show go topless. Your character is a stripper, so you have to,’ Greer recalled Raeden telling her
Raeden was 24 when she was offered the role of Kelsey Burgess following an audition in which Fukunaga asked her to improvise.
Kelsey was a stripper, and though Raeden was aware of her character’s occupation, she did not believe she would have to be nude as the script she auditioned with showed that a majority of the dialogue would be occurring in the club’s dressing room.
Additionally, Kelsey claims there was no nudity rider in her contract, which are included for actors agreeing to go naked in front of the camera.
However she grew concerned once she received the full script and saw her character was to dance.

‘I started wondering, “Are they going to try something with me? Because this has never been mentioned that there was any nudity in this role.”‘
She even sought assurances from her agent and casting, who assured her there would be no nudity involved.
‘”So, I started asking after that, like, “To be clear, there’s no nudity involved in this role, right?” I kept getting the answer from my agent and from casting—no, that would be absolutely unheard of if they asked you to do nudity after it wasn’t disclosed. There was no rider, there was no negotiating this into your contract, that would not happen, so stop asking about it because it’s making you look amateurish.” So, I was like, “OK, I’m gonna quit worrying about it.”‘
However, on the day they shot the scene, Greer saw her costume in her trailer – pasties and a nude thing.

After raising her concerns with a PA over the costume, Greer spoke with Fukunaga and another producer over the issue.
‘I was, like, frantic because I don’t want to do that, I don’t want to get naked. I wasn’t expecting to [and] this is not fair. Are you expecting me to do this?’
‘Cary said to me at that moment, “Everybody on this show goes topless. All the women on the show go topless. Your character is a stripper, so you have to,” Greer recalled.
‘He was trying different things to convince me that it’s not a big deal,’ she said. ‘It [was] going to be very tasteful, or it’s just gonna be really insignificant in the background. I was like, “Well, if it’s so insignificant, why is he so insistent that I have to do this?” It was just on and on and on with no budging.’

Still, Greer refused to appear topless, and Fukunaga and the producer said they would devise of something else and come back to her.
However, several hours later, a producer came to her trailer and informed her they had found someone else to take the role.
The role ended up going to Amber Carollo, an extra on the show whose sole IMDB credit is an uncredited acting role as ‘girl in bathroom’ in the 2014 film 22 Jump Street.
Kelsey’s original dialogue appears to have been reduced for the final cut, with the character saying just a few lines in one scene.
Carolla, in character as Kelsey, is seen clad in a sparkly bikini top as she touches up her makeup around other topless women in the club’s dressing room.
Then, in a close-up of Kelsey, she is seen dancing on stage wearing a revealing American flag-one piece. She begins undoing her top just as it cuts to Harrelson’s role.
She can be seen dancing topless in the background, though still prominently placed.
Next, she is seen heading to a party in a car wearing casual clothing. She says no other lines.
Fukunaga directed the highly anticipated James Bond blockbuster ‘No Time To Die’ after taking over from Danny Boyle, who left the project due to creative differences. It will be the last to star Daniel Craig as 007.
Next up Fukunaga is set to direct Tokyo Ghost.
The filmmaker will helm the adaptation of the sci-fi comic book series created by Rick Remender and Sean Gordon Murphy.
Tokyo Ghost is set in 2089 where humanity has become fully addicted to technology as an escape from reality. It tells the story of peacekeepers Debbie Decay and Led Dent, who work in the Isles of Los Angeles and are given a job that takes them to the last tech-free country on Earth – the garden nation of Tokyo.
As well as directing, Fukunaga will produce the film with Jon Silk of Silk Mass and Hayden Lautenbach from his Parliament of Owls banner.
