Megan Thee Stallion inspired Maxine Waters with last year’s NSFW hit WAP: ‘Now that’s audacity!’

  • February 23, 2021

Megan Thee Stallion gets stamp of approval from Representative Maxine Waters as politician praises her racy hit WAP: ‘Now that’s audacity!’

Her collaboration with a fellow rapper was arguably the most buzzworthy track of 2020, causing both widespread praise as well as derision.

But Megan Thee Stallion received validation from an incredible and unlikely source on Monday, when she participated in a video chat with none other than US representative Maxine Waters for Harper’s Bazaar.

In the clip, Maxine, 82, brought up Megan’s NSFW hit WAP with Cardi B from last year, and heaped on the praise.

‘Now that’s audacity. That is audacity,’ Waters said of the song, in the interview moderated by Kaitlyn Greenidge.

At first, when Maxine brought up the song, Megan, 26, squirmed and laughed.

‘Don’t worry!’ the politician assured her repeatedly.

She went on to say that it was commendable for Megan and Cardi to speak their minds through their music, as male pioneers in hip-hop had done before them.

‘[The song represents] the ability for women to take charge of what they want to say,’ Waters reflected.

‘I had paid attention to the young gangster rap time when men were in charge,’ she added. ‘They said whatever they wanted to say, they said whatever they want to say about women, what have you. But women didn’t say – for a long time – what they could say or wanted to say or dared to say.

‘So I’m with you. I’m fine. I have no problem,’ Maxine declared to a bashful MTS.

Waters’ viewpoint stands in stark contrast with more conservative politicians and pundits, who called out Cardi and Megan for the saucy and raunchy lyrics in WAP.

But for Maxine, the message was clear: ‘I’m seeing today that you young women have taken control of your art and you’re defining it in ways that never would be defined by anybody else. And you’re willing to have the courage and the nerves and the audacity to say whatever the h*ll you think.’
