‘The Trial of the Chicago 7,’ ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ lead Writers Guild nominations
“The Trial of the Chicago 7” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” are one step closer to Oscar glory, picking up Writers Guild Awards nominations on Tuesday.
Aaron Sorkin’s all-star “Chicago 7” will compete for best original screenplay honors with Emerald Fennell’s “Promising Young Woman,” the Fred Hampton biopic “Judas and the Black Messiah,” the hearing loss story “Sound of Metal” and the time loop rom-com “Palm Springs.”
“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” which marks the late Chadwick Boseman’s final role, is up for adapted screenplay honors along with Regina King’s Kemp Powers adaptation “One Night in Miami,” Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” the Tom Hanks film “News of the World” and Netflix’s “The White Tiger.”

Documentary screenplay nominees are “All In: The Fight for Democracy,” “The Dissident,” “Herb Alpert Is …,” “Red Penguins” and “Totally Under Control.”
Winners of the 73rd annual awards will be announced March 21.
