“Everything Everywhere All at Once” and dark comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” will tussle to be awards season frontrunners at the Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night, the last stop on the road to next month’s Oscars ceremony.
With a leading five nominations each, both “Everything Everywhere” and “Banshees” boast multiple actor contenders and are also up for best ensemble – the equivalent of the Academy Awards’ best picture prize – against Steven Spielberg’s coming-of-age “The Fabelmans,” Hollywood epic “Babylon” and female-fronted drama “Women Talking.” Actors comprise the largest voting bloc in the Academy, which why the SAG Awards are usually a strong harbinger for the Oscars: In the two out of the last three years, the best cast victor (“Parasite” in 2020, “CODA” in 2022) went on to also take home best picture.
