Hollywood has plenty of gold to give out this awards season, and the first major prizes of 2020 will be doled out Sunday night at the 77th annual Golden Globes.
Hosted for the fifth time by comedian Ricky Gervais, the glitzy (and now meatless) extravaganza (NBC, 8 p.m. ET/5 ET) put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is the first big stop on the road to next month’s Academy Awards and will begin to suss out the contenders from the pretenders.
Three Netflix movies – Martin Scorsese’s acclaimed gangster epic “The Irishman,” Noah Baumbach’s divorce drama “Marriage Story” and the religious dramedy “The Two Popes” – will compete for best drama against World War I thriller “1917†and villainous origin story “Joker.” Meanwhile the category for the night’s other big prize, best comedy or musical, includes comedy biopic “Dolemite Is My Name,” World War II satire “Jojo Rabbit,” murder mystery “Knives Out,” Quentin Tarantino’s 1960s-set “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood†and Elton John musical/biopic “Rocketman.â€
