Disney’s ‘Mulan,’ ‘Bill & Ted,’ more movies delayed due to coronavirus spikes

Another day, another major movie scooting off its release date again due to coronavirus.

“Mulan,” Disney’s live-action remake that was originally scheduled to open March 27 but due to COVID-19 concerns shifted to July 24, has pushed back its theatrical release date again to Aug. 21. The move comes a day after the other July tentpole still standing, Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet,” moved to an Aug. 12 release in theaters, many of which are planning to reopen next month.

Also delayed on Friday: The Russell Crowe road-rage thriller “Unhinged” moved from July 10 to July 31, while “Bill Ted Face the Music,” the third installment of Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter’s time-traveling comedy series, has moved back its release two weeks to Aug. 28. The one movie next month not budging (at least not yet) is the romantic comedy “The Broken Hearts Gallery,” currently slated for July 17.

Rather than “Mulan” flipping to a Disney+ streaming release like “Artemis Fowl,” Disney co-chairmen Alan Horn and Alan Bergman reiterated their intention to release the film “where we believe it belongs – on the world stage and the big screen for audiences around the globe to enjoy together.”

Their statement continues: “While the pandemic has changed our release plans for ‘Mulan’ and we will continue to be flexible as conditions require, it has not changed our belief in the power of this film and its message of hope and perseverance. Director Niki Caro and our cast and crew have created a beautiful, epic, and moving film that is everything the cinematic experience should be.”
