2020 Golden Globes Nominations Snub Female Directors Yet Again

The Golden Globes 2020 nominees have been revealed and, once again, not a single female director received a nomination, despite a wealth of possible, worthy candidates in 2019. This year saw a number of hit movies directed by women, and a high number of critically-acclaimed movies directed by women that were nominated in other major categories. It’s a glaring omission, but one that, unfortunately for many, doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

Bong Joon-Ho (Parasite), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time In Hollywood), Sam Mendes (1917) and Todd Phillips (Joker) were nominated in the Best Director category. Golden Globes is entering its 77th year and, in that time, only five female directors have been nominated. What’s more, only one has ever taken home the prize, with Barbra Streisand taking home Best Director in 1984 for Yentl. Streisand was nominated a second time for her work on The Prince of Tides in 1992.

Other female directors to earn nominations in the past include Jane Campion (The Piano), Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation), Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty) and Ava DuVernay (Selma). Chatter on social media was quick to point out the snub. In 2017, Natalie Portman famously called out the Golden Globes for the lack of recognition of female directors and several shared clips of that speech.

One of the most notable individual snubs was that of Greta Gerwig, who directed the acclaimed adaptation of Little Women. Gerwig also directed the Oscar-nominated Lady Bird, which failed to garner her a nomination as well. Other notable female directors in 2019 include Olivia Wilde (Booksmart), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Alma Har’el (Honey Boy), Lulu Wang (The Farewell) and Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), just to name a few. Har’el tweeted the following once the nominations were announced.

“Good morning to everyone that’s writing me about the #goldenglobes. I feel you but know this. I was on the inside for the first time this year. These are not our people and they do not represent us. Do not look for justice in the awards system. We are building a new world.”

In the past, it was possible to argue that there perhaps weren’t all that many features directed by women, which made it so there was a smaller sample size of movies to pull from. But 2019 was full of titles that are sure to score tons of nominations in other major categories throughout awards season, which magnifies the issue in a big way. Just as a couple of examples, Saoirse Ronan was nominated in the Best Actress, drama category for Little Women, and The Farewell was nominated in the foreign-language Best Picture category at the Golden Globes. The 77th annual Golden Globes telecast is scheduled for January 5 on NBC, with Ricky Gervais set to host.
