Two Capitol Hill staffers and one USDA staffer were injured in a major car accident that involved a government caravan in El Campo, Texas, USDA said Thursday.
The USDA staffer and Hill staffers for House Agriculture Committee Chairman Michael Conaway, R-Texas, were sent to the hospital to be checked out, the department told USA TODAY in an email.
Conaway and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue were also traveling in the caravan, but were in a separate vehicle that was not involved in the accident, USDA said.
Perdue and Conaway were in El Campo to survey damage from Hurricane Harvey. The accident happened as they were leaving a listening session with agricultural producers and farmers, USDA said.
According to the Texas Tribune, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller was also in the caravan.
An SUV in the caravan collided with a semi truck, the Tribune reported. Both vehicles went across a median and ended up on the other side of the highway.
