Senate Judiciary Committee drops subpoena for Paul Manafort testimony

WASHINGTON —  Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort won’t be speaking Wednesday before a Senate panel investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election after all.

The Senate Judiciary Committee had issued a subpoena Monday to compel Manafort’s testimony but an updated schedule from the committee showed that Manafort was no longer listed among Wednesday’s slated witnesses. The president’s eldest son Donald Trump Jr., who had been expected to meet with investigators, was also no longer scheduled to appear.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., told Fox News that Manafort and Trump Jr. would appear before the committee “hopefully in September.”

“The staffs are negotiating and it just got too close and members need to prepare and they need to get documents to be able to prepare, so that’s what we’ve set upon now,” Feinstein told Fox.

Manafort and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner spoke with House Intelligence Committee members for about three and a half hours on Tuesday.

The Senate and House Intelligence committees also are conducting parallel inquiries into possible coordination between the campaign and Russians who sought to influence the presidential election by hacking Democrats.

“As with other witnesses, we may be willing to excuse him from Wednesday’s hearing if he would be willing to agree to production of documents and a transcribed interview,” Feinstein and Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley, the Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said earlier Tuesday in a joint statement.
