In a public spat that just keeps getting uglier, President Trump and retiring Sen. Bob Corker from Tennessee had harsh words for each other on social media. Corker went even further in a New York Times interview.
USA TODAY

President Trump insisted on Tuesday that the New York Times tricked Sen. Bob Corker by recording an interview in which the senator was critical of the president.

“Was made to sound a fool, and that’s what I am dealing with!” the president tweeted, seeming to mock the Republican senator from Tennessee. He also bestowed a new nickname on the senator: “Liddle Bob Corker.”

But the New York Times shot back that the interview was recorded with Corker’s “explicit permission.”

Additionally, the Times said Corker asked the reporter to record it.

It then released the audio where Corker tells the reporter, “I know they’re recording it, and I hope you are, too.”

Corker was referencing his aides, who were also on the call.

As the interview kicked off, Corker said, “I understand that we’re on the record.”

The president’s tweet was just the latest in a feud between himself and Corker, who has made headlines for his open critiques of the administration and of Trump himself.

“I know for a fact that every single day at the White House it’s a situation of trying to contain him,” Corker said in the Times interview.

Corker named some of the administration officials he believed were keeping the prsident in check: White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, Defense Secretary James Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

The issue, he said, was that Trump didn’t seem to understand the consequences of his actions. That didn’t make the president a “warmonger,” he said. But he described Trump as someone who was president on a reality TV show.

“I don’t think he appreciates that when the president of the United States speaks, and says the things that he does, the impact that it has around the world, especially in the region that he’s addressing,” he said. “It’s concerning to me.”
