WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi admitted she’s tired of talking about President Donald Trump, telling late-night host Jimmy Kimmel that impeachment wouldn’t lead to the president’s ouster because Republicans in the Senate are in Trump’s “pocket.”

Kimmel, a frequent critic of the president, pressed Pelosi during her appearance Thursday night on the increasing number of Democrats in favor of impeaching Trump and special counsel Robert Mueller’s apparent suggestion this week that holding the president accountable now falls to Congress.

“We need you to get in there and to take care of this,” Kimmel told Pelosi.

Pelosi repeated her belief that the president hopes to be impeached, explaining that Republicans in the Senate are “completely in the pocket of Donald Trump” and would likely block the effort.

“He knows it’s not a good idea to be impeached, but the silver lining for him is then he believes he would be exonerated by the United States Senate, and there’s a school of thought that says if the Senate acquits you, why bring charges against him in the private sector when he’s no longer president?” Pelosi told the ABC host.

After Kimmel brought up widespread support for legislation tackling issues such as stricter gun laws and questioned how Democrats can combat dishonest information from the White House, Pelosi admitted: “I’m done with him, in terms of talking about him.”

Kimmel, highlighting the history of tense meetings between her and the president, offered one more piece of advice when it comes to Trump: “The next time you go into a meeting, a negotiation, with him, bring McNuggets.”

For weeks, Pelosi has tried to tamp down calls within her party to start impeachment proceedings. Those calls got louder this week after Mueller made his first public statements since he started investigating the president and Russian election interference, explaining that charging Trump with obstruction of justice was “not an option” for the special counsel’s office because of a Justice Department policy.
