CBS News is reporting that Republican Sen. John McCain is returning to Arizona after spending several days in a Maryland hospital recovering from side effects from chemotherapy treatment for brain cancer. This means he will miss the final tax bill vote.

PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said Tuesday he talked with Cindy McCain over the weekend about U.S. Sen. John McCain’s health, saying during a radio interview that the senator’s spirits were up.

John McCain, 81, was diagnosed in July with a deadly form of brain cancer, and last week he was hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

McCain’s office characterized his hospitalization as “normal side effects of his ongoing” therapy to fight glioblastoma.

On Monday, Cindy McCain announced that the couple was back in Arizona for Christmas.

“This weekend, I talked with Cindy, I got a really good report from her,” Ducey said during a KTAR-FM (92.3) interview. “She said the senator is up and at ’em, and is bossing everyone around, so very much back in his element. So, I’m rooting for him.”

McCain’s return to Washington

Speculation has run rampant about the future of McCain’s Senate seat. If McCain were to leave the Senate before his term ends in 2022, the governor would decide who fills the vacancy. He would have to appoint a Republican.

Ducey called McCain a “battler” and said he was confident the former Vietnam prisoner of war, six-term senator and 2008 GOP presidential nominee would return to the Senate after the holidays.

“It seems like he’s getting healthy again,” the Republican governor said in his radio interview. “I know he’s going to be headed back to Washington at the turn of the calendar year, so I’m excited. I think it’s really good news.”

Asked what he would do if McCain retired, Ducey issued a message to those individuals and their surrogates jockeying behind the scenes for a potential appointment.

“John McCain is the elected senior senator for Arizona until 2022 … I have found it a little bit off-color, some of the prognosticators and pundits who have been making these predictions as to the senator’s outcome,” he said. “I think people should be praying for him and rooting for him.

“To the politicians out there that have been openly lobbying for this position, they basically disqualified themselves for showing their true character.”

Ducey again shut down any notion he might be interested in becoming a U.S. senator himself.
