White House Senior Advisor Kellyanne Conway was pictured kneeling on the Oval Office couch setting off a firestorm on Twitter. It reminded of us some similar Oval Office controversies from the past.

Actor Kal Penn breathed fresh life into “Couch-gate” Wednesday when he tweeted a photo of himself posing like Kellyanne Conway on an Oval Office set.

“Kal-E-Anne” reads the tweet. The accompanying photo shows the star of Harold and Kumar go to White Castle clad in a suit with his pants pulled up past his knees, kneeling on a couch, with his shoes still on.

The replica Oval Office from the Designated Survivor set looks just like the real thing except for tape on the floor showing the actors’ marks and a black screen in the background. The woman in the background appears to be Penn’s co-star Italia Ricci, who is tagged in the tweet.

Couch-gate began when an image of Conway propped on her knees on an Oval Office couch with her shoes on went viral. Some social media users accused her of being disrespectful to the office and the visiting leaders from America’s historically black colleges and universities by sitting on the couch in such a fashion.

MORE:

Conway said she “meant no disrespect” and that she “didn’t mean to” have her feet on the couch. She was merely trying to get in a better position to snap a picture of the event with her smartphone, she said.

Many have defended Conway by pointing to the fact that former president Barack Obama was seen putting his feet on the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office several times. Images of Obama doing so sparked their own outrage during his presidency (although he was not the first president to put his feet on the desk).

Penn worked in Obama’s White House and has been a fierce critic of President Trump.
