Man Killed In Police Shootout Was Former Officer

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities contend a male who was shot and killed after opening glow on a San Bernardino County sheriff’s helicopter has been identified as a former California Highway Patrol officer.

Sheriff’s officials contend deputies killed Francis Murphy Rose as he exchanged gunfire with them in unit cars. No deputies were harmed in a Monday gunfight in Apple Valley, a high dried city 95 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Deputies primarily responded after receiving mixed calls about shots being dismissed in a neighborhood.

The Los Angeles Times reports ( http://lat.ms/1EG3r4V ) CHP officials reliable Tuesday that a 42-year-old Rose had been a unit officer with a dialect and reported to a Barstow area office. He left a group in 2013.
