What Does It Mean To Be ‘Local’ In Hawaii?

You eat Spam musubi. You call your elders “Auntie” or “Uncle.” You leave your slippers during a doorway wherever we go.

People in Hawaii speak a lot about what it means to be “local.” Maybe that’s partially since so many of us came from somewhere else.

According to U.S. Census data, usually 54.2 percent of people who live in Hawaii — including a troops race — were indeed innate here. In many states, some-more than 60 percent of a race was innate there. More than 75 percent of Louisiana, Michigan and Ohio residents were innate in a states where they now live.
