Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will remain hospitalized after concussion

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is expected to remain hospitalized after suffering a concussion.

Spokesperson David Popp told USA TODAY Thursday McConnell “expected to remain in the hospital for a few days of observation and treatment.”  

McConnell, 81, was hospitalized late Wednesday and is being treated for a concussion after falling at a dinner event in Washington.

In January, McConnell, became the longest-serving party leader in Senate history.

While details of the longtime Kentucky senator’s fall is unknown, a concussion – a form of traumatic brain injury –occurs when an individual suffers a blow to the head or violent shaking and can have serious implications. 

When asked if he had spoken to the GOP leader, President Joe Biden told reporters that he had spoken to McConnell’s family, saying “I think he’s going to be all right.”

“The leader is grateful to the medical professionals for their care and to his colleagues for their warm wishes,” Popp added. 

suffered a shoulder fracture in 2019 following a fall at his home in Louisville.
