The Liberal government is sending Transport Minister Marc Garneau to Paris this weekend in an effort to ensure the World Anti-Doping Agency stays in Montreal.<\/p>\n

WADA is committed to staying in the city until at least 2021<\/a>. There is\u00a0speculation, however, that at that point\u00a0the office could move to Europe, closer to the International Olympic Committee, which is based\u00a0in Switzerland.<\/p>\n

Marc Roy, Garneau’s spokesperson, confirmed in an email Friday that he will make the trip to meet with officials on Sunday to\u00a0“make the case for Montreal.”<\/p>\n

WADA’s executive committee is slated to meet Sunday in Paris.<\/p>\n

Garneau\u00a0is expected to offer more details later this morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n

WADA was established in Montreal\u00a0in 1999 with the help of Dick Pound, a former Canadian Olympic swimmer and the agency’s first president.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Agency has downplayed potential move<\/h2>\n

The stated goal of the organization\u00a0is to “preserve the integrity of sport and uphold the values of fair play.” It\u00a0has a staff of\u00a074 in Montreal and 88 worldwide.<\/p>\n

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre\u00a0has repeatedly\u00a0expressed concern about the potential of losing WADA.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Olivier Niggli,\u00a0WADA’s Director General, told Radio-Canada last March that there were no plans “moving the headquarters of the agency.”<\/p>\n

“Nothing is official about our situation after 2021, but reports about a move after that date are pure speculation,” WADA spokesperson Ben Nichols said at the time.<\/p>\n
