Trump at UN: Iran deal is an embarrassment to the US<\/a><\/h4>\n

President calls out ‘reckless regime’ in address to General Assembly<\/p>\n

President Trump slammed the Iranian nuclear deal in his inaugural address to the United Nations in New York on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

As he lambasted \u201crogue regimes\u201d \u2013 Iran, North Korea and Syria \u2013 Trump took aim<\/a> at the Obama administration\u2019s nuclear arms deal with Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Iran deal was one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into,\u201d Trump said. \u201cFrankly, that deal is an embarrassment to the United States, and I don\u2019t think you\u2019ve heard the last of it, believe me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Iran\u2019s foreign minister responded to Trump\u2019s speech<\/a> on Twitter, calling it \u201cignorant\u201d and belonging \u201cin the medieval times.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFake empathy for Iranians fools no one,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The nuclear deal with Iran has long been a point of contention, especially among Republicans who opposed it. Read on for a look at what the deal is, and what Trump has said he would do about it.<\/p>\n

What is the Iran nuclear deal?<\/b><\/p>\n

The Iran nuclear deal framework \u2013 officially the “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action” \u2013 was a historic agreement reached<\/a> by Iran and several world powers, including the U.S., in 2015, under Barack Obama\u2019s presidency.<\/p>\n

In part, the deal was made to reduce Iran\u2019s ability to produce two components used in making nuclear weapons, plutonium and uranium. In return, crippling economic sanctions on Iran were to be abated.<\/p>\n

“Every pathway to a nuclear weapon is cut off,” Obama said at the time. “This deal is not built on trust. It is built on verification.”<\/p>\n

IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL DRIVES WEDGE BETWEEN US AND FRANCE<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

A point of contention for many opponents is the deal’s so-called \u201csunset clause\u201d which would ease some of the restrictions on Iran\u2019s nuclear program over time.<\/p>\n

The deal was reached after two years of negotiations.<\/p>\n

Certification that Iran is complying with the deal must be sent to Congress every 90 days. The first under the Trump administration<\/a> noted that Tehran was in compliance.<\/p>\n

What has Trump said about it?<\/b><\/p>\n

Ahead of Trump\u2019s public criticism at the U.N. General Assembly, his administration slapped more than a dozen sanctions<\/a> on Iranian individuals and groups in July for aiding its non-nuclear weapons program.<\/p>\n

The sanctions froze assets in the U.S. and prevented Americans from doing business with these 18 parties.<\/p>\n

During the presidential campaign, Trump accused Obama<\/a> and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, then his opponent, for making Iran a \u201cworld power\u201d under the nuclear deal, which he called \u201cthe highest level of incompetence.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you take a look at Iran from four, five years ago, they were dying,\u201d Trump said during an event in Virginia Beach, Va., in September 2016. \u201cThey had sanctions, they were being choked to death and they were dying. They weren\u2019t even going to be much of a threat.\u201d<\/p>\n

TILLERSON SAYS IRAN NUCLEAR DEAL ‘REALLY HAS TO BE REVISITED’<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n

On Twitter, Trump has referred to the agreement as \u201ca direct national security threat,\u201d<\/a> a \u201ccatastrophe that must be stopped,\u201d<\/a> the \u201cdumbest most dangerous misjudgments ever entered into in history of our country\u201d<\/a> and \u201cthe best deal of any kind in history\u201d<\/a> for Iran.<\/p>\n

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned this week<\/a> that the U.S. would pay a \u201chigh cost\u201d if it backs out of the agreement.\u00a0<\/p>\n
