{"id":91742,"date":"2017-09-19T01:33:37","date_gmt":"2017-09-19T01:33:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/trudeau-may-strike-working-group-for-seamless-post-brexit-trade-transition.html"},"modified":"2017-09-19T01:33:37","modified_gmt":"2017-09-19T01:33:37","slug":"trudeau-may-strike-working-group-for-seamless-post-brexit-trade-transition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/trudeau-may-strike-working-group-for-seamless-post-brexit-trade-transition.html","title":{"rendered":"Trudeau, May strike working group for &#8216;seamless&#8217; post-Brexit trade transition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada&#8217;s free trade deal with the European Union will form the basis for a swift transition to a post-Brexit trading relationship between Canada and the U.K., Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his British counterpart Theresa May suggested Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau and May spoke to reporters after a late-morning meeting on Parliament Hill.<\/p>\n<p>The two leaders told reporters they agreed to a &#8220;seamless&#8221;\u00a0transition of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada after the U.K. leaves the EU and is no longer a party to that agreement.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"embedlinks\">\n<li>Canada won&#8217;t do business with Boeing while it&#8217;s &#8216;busy trying to sue us,&#8217; Trudeau says<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The U.K. is Canada&#8217;s biggest export partner in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>May said her government will be putting together a &#8220;working group&#8221; with Canada\u00a0on a new trade deal, with\u00a0CETA\u00a0as the basis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\"><strong class=\"spaced\">Does working group on Canada-UK trade cross the line?<\/strong>6:32<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We believe it makes sense to take the trade agreements the U.K. is part of as part of the European Union with Canada and say that&#8217;s the basis, at the point we leave, for a bilateral relationship between the U.K. and Canada,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of course, over time, it would then be possible if we chose to change the details of that relationship to do so.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>May said the U.K. has already\u00a0discussed this with the EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\"><strong class=\"spaced\">Trudeau and May discuss trade post-Brexit<\/strong>1:18<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau\u00a0agreed there could be changes to shape this new deal and make it\u00a0particular to the relationship between Canada and the U.K. after the initial post-Brexit transition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will be able to move\u00a0forward in a\u00a0smooth transition that keeps the essence of CETA applicable to the U.K. in ways that respect the EU&#8217;s requirements and rules,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>CETA, which was approved in February after years of talks,\u00a0officially comes into effect on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>In late March the U.K. triggered <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">a two-year window to negotiate Brexit<\/a>, although there&#8217;s a possibility that could be extended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\"><strong class=\"spaced\">Trudeau welcomes May to Canada<\/strong>2:22<\/p><\/p>\n<p>Article source: http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/justin-trudeau-theresa-may-meeting-1.4294515?cmp=rss<\/a>\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canada&#8217;s free trade deal with the European Union will form the basis for a swift transition to a post-Brexit trading relationship between Canada and the U.K., Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his British counterpart Theresa May suggested Monday.
