\n Democrat Dan Helmer, a candidate for Virginia\u2019s 10th congressional district, is being roasted for one of the \u201cworst ever\u201d political campaign ads for releasing an imitation of the Tom Cruise movie, \u201cTop Gun.\u201d<\/p>\n
Democrat Dan Helmer, a candidate for Virginia\u2019s 10th congressional district, released a campaign ad Monday entitled \u201cHelmer Zone\u201d that is being ripped across the board by journalists as one of the \u201cworst ever\u201d political ads.<\/p>\n
The ad became popular throughout Twitter after Mic reporter Emily Singer flagged it as potentially being \u201cthe worst\u201d she\u2019s ever seen.<\/p>\n
It features candidate Helmer, wearing a shirt with \u201cveteran\u201d on it, and spotting current 10th District Rep. Barbara Comstock (R., Va.) at a bar. The scene is inspired by the classic 1986 Top Gun bar scene and is chalk full of Goose\/Maverick references, from The Righteous Brothers\u2019s \u201cYou\u2019ve Lost That Loving Feeling\u201d to \u201cdanger zone.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBet you can\u2019t get her to hold a town hall,\u201d a woman tells Helmer.<\/p>\n
\u201cTown hall? I\u2019ll do you one better than that. We\u2019ve lost that loving feeling,\u201d Helmer replies.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, Dan,\u201d the woman pleads.<\/p>\n
Helmer then sings, karaoke style, about Comstock\u2019s lack of town hall meetings, and her opposition to Obamacare and Planned Parenthood, all complete with intentionally bad singing.<\/p>\n
