{"id":78938,"date":"2017-06-09T15:43:25","date_gmt":"2017-06-09T15:43:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/?p=78938"},"modified":"2017-06-09T15:43:25","modified_gmt":"2017-06-09T15:43:25","slug":"natos-secretary-general-hopes-to-see-more-of-canada-following-defence-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/natos-secretary-general-hopes-to-see-more-of-canada-following-defence-plan.html","title":{"rendered":"NATO&#8217;s secretary general hopes to see more of Canada following defence plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>The head of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization says he is expecting Canada to increase its presence on missions now that the Liberal government has promised to spend more on soldiers, ships and fighter jets.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We are not able to tell exactly today what kind of missions and operations we will have in five to 10 years, but now we need more Canadian presence in Europe,&#8221;<\/span> NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told Chris Hall, host of CBC Radio&#8217;s <em>The House.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are already many different missions and operations where Canada is participating, but of course we hope that they can further strengthen their participation in NATO missions and operations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday the Liberal government unveiled its long-awaited defence policy, which will increase the defence budget by 70 per cent over the next decade to $32.7 billion. The plan also\u00a0pledges to buy 15 advanced warships and 88 new fighter jets.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if he expects\u00a0Canada to make additional contributions going forward, including more rotations through NATO exercises,\u00a0Stoltenberg\u00a0said &#8220;absolutely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">More soldiers, ships and planes for military<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><\/strong><strong><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Freeland rejects Trump&#8217;s nationalist policies<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"><strong>Listen to CBC Radio&#8217;s <em>The House<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;We are building up our maritime presence both in the Atlantic but also in the Black Sea and other places, and we need those Canadian planes, for instance, for air policing ,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gen. Jonathan Vance, chief of the defence staff,\u00a0said decisions about individual NATO missions are made by the government, but the increased spending and bolstered fleet mean\u00a0Canada can contribute more going forward.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Absolutely\u00a0yes we will be able to do more in the future, not because we&#8217;re altered dramatically in terms of our size, because we&#8217;re not, but what we will have will be relevant to the future,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Absent this investment, we may have the size but\u00a0we would be irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A\u00a0lot of this is a\u00a0commitment\u00a0for NATO and other allies for the long term so\u00a0that NATO has not only the\u00a0qualitative\u00a0but the\u00a0quantitative\u00a0predictable\u00a0capacity of Canada in mind for the\u00a0long term.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>Stoltenberg will travel to Europe with Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan later this month\u00a0to greet Canadian troops in Latvia as <\/span>part of a NATO operation to counter Russian aggression in Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Our approach to Russia is based on a dual tract: defence and dialogue. Russia is our neighbour. Russia is here to stay.
