(Colin Perkel\/Canadian Press)<\/p>\n<p>In her\u00a0letter, Meilleur expressed\u00a0regret that her nomination had been the source of so much controversy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Considering this situation, I have concluded that my ability to perform this function fully and to act on behalf of Canadians would be greatly compromised,&#8221; Meilleur wrote in French.<\/p>\n<h2>Appointments process a &#8216;mockery&#8217;: Scheer<\/h2>\n<p>In question period, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer said the prime minister was making a &#8220;mockery&#8221; of a supposedly open and transparent appointment process for an officer of Parliament by picking Meilleur.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said it was rich for the Conservatives to criticize his government&#8217;s record on appointments, when former prime minister Stephen Harper &#8220;completely botched&#8221; <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">the process for picking a Supreme Court justice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;After 10 years of excessive partisanship by the former Conservative government, we know that picking the best people for the job, regardless of their backgrounds, and people that reflect\u00a0the full diversity of this country, is what Canadians expect. This is exactly what we&#8217;re delivering,&#8221; Trudeau\u00a0said in response, adding Meilleur has always offered &#8220;magnificent service&#8221; to minority-language communities.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The prime minister has embarrassed the heritage minister and he&#8217;s embarrassed himself,&#8221; Conservative House leader Candice Bergen added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\"><strong class=\"spaced\">Trudeau defends nomination process that named Meilleur<\/strong>1:10<\/p>\n<h2>Community groups welcome Meilleur&#8217;s decision<\/h2>\n<p>Meilleur&#8217;s\u00a0nomination had been criticized by several linguistic minority community groups, who today said they welcome\u00a0her decision to withdraw.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very relieved, because this process had got to be quite complicated and painful,&#8221; said Geoffrey Chambers, the vice-president of the Quebec Community Groups Network.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The process itself was a problem and then Mme.\u00a0Meilleur&#8217;s positions in\u00a0regard to our community were worrying, so we&#8217;re relieved that this can start all over again from the beginning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\"><p>\n <span class=\"pullquote-quotation\">&#8216;It was a fiasco from the beginning to the end.&#8217;<\/span><br \/>\n <cite class=\"pullquote-source\">&#8211; Kevin Arseneau, president of the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de l&#8217;Acadie du Nouveau-Brunswick<\/cite>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Chambers said his organization may still submit a complaint to the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages, as it believes the nomination process was &#8220;clearly&#8221; at\u00a0odds with requirements set out in the Official Languages Act.<\/p>\n<p>The president of the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de l&#8217;Acadie du Nouveau-Brunswick\u00a0also welcomed\u00a0Meilleur&#8217;s decision, but said he was disappointed she had to take the fall for the government&#8217;s appointment process.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t understand the Liberal Party and Justin Trudeau&#8217;s political calculations on this,&#8221; Kevin Arseneau\u00a0told CBC News.\u00a0&#8220;It was a fiasco from the beginning to the end. It&#8217;s going to stay in the record books as a really unexplainable fiasco.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Arseneau said his organization still intends\u00a0to seek a judicial review of the appointment process, and hopes\u00a0the government will start &#8220;from scratch&#8221; by consulting more closely with representatives of linguistic minority groups.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the president of the <em>F\u00e9d\u00e9ration des communaut\u00e9s francophones et acadienne<\/em> <em>du Canada<\/em>, Sylviane Lanthier, praised Meilleur for her choice to step down as the government&#8217;s nominee.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With this decision, she has put her commitment to linguistic duality and <em>la\u00a0Francophonie<\/em> ahead of what she personally would have wanted.
