{"id":74626,"date":"2017-03-17T20:44:55","date_gmt":"2017-03-17T20:44:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/canada-to-give-119m-in-aid-to-middle-east-and-african-countries-suffering-food-crises.html"},"modified":"2017-03-17T20:44:55","modified_gmt":"2017-03-17T20:44:55","slug":"canada-to-give-119m-in-aid-to-middle-east-and-african-countries-suffering-food-crises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/canada-to-give-119m-in-aid-to-middle-east-and-african-countries-suffering-food-crises.html","title":{"rendered":"Canada to give $119M in aid to Middle East and African countries suffering food crises"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Canada will provide $119 million to help people in countries in the midst of food crises.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen told reporters in Toronto on Friday that the money will go toward\u00a0those in Nigeria, South Sudan, Somalia and Yemen\u00a0who are facing extreme food insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These 20 million people need humanitarian assistance now,&#8221; he said at the Keele Street Community Hub. &#8220;We know that Canadians care and want their government to respond to the needs of people in these regions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said Canada will provide\u00a0$27 million to Nigeria, $21 million to Somalia, $37 million to South Sudan and $34 million to Yemen.<\/p>\n<p>Famine has already been declared in parts of South Sudan and food crises are developing there, in northeastern Nigeria, and Yemen due to conflicts and in Somalia due to drought.<\/p>\n<h2>Canada responding to UN appeal<\/h2>\n<p \/>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s contribution\u00a0will be delivered through United Nations agencies and non-governmental humanitarian organizations. It will go toward\u00a0the provision of food, health-care services, clean water and sanitation facilities and to protect livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>Hussen said the Canadian government urges the power &#8220;players&#8221;\u00a0in these countries to allow aid to be delivered.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, the UN appealed for urgent aid, saying that this is the &#8220;largest humanitarian crisis&#8221; since the end of the Second World War. It will take $4.4 billion in humanitarian aid by July to avert disaster, the UN said then.<\/p>\n<p>Hussen said these four countries have been identified as the most in need right now.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of the food insecurity has been created by conflict and displacement from conflict zones, the minister\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Canada provided over $100 million in\u00a0humanitarian assistance to\u00a0people in all four countries.<\/p>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p \/>\n<p>Article source: http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/immigration-minister-ahmed-hussen-1.4030218?cmp=rss<\/a>\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canada will provide $119 million to help people in countries in the midst of food crises.
