{"id":71792,"date":"2017-02-23T12:54:43","date_gmt":"2017-02-23T12:54:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/public-servant-devastated-over-65k-tax-slip-error.html"},"modified":"2017-02-23T12:54:43","modified_gmt":"2017-02-23T12:54:43","slug":"public-servant-devastated-over-65k-tax-slip-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/public-servant-devastated-over-65k-tax-slip-error.html","title":{"rendered":"Public servant devastated over $65K tax slip error"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A public servant on maternity leave\u00a0says her tax slip is\u00a0incorrect by $65,000 because of the problem-plagued Phoenix pay system, and she doesn&#8217;t understand how the government could &#8220;mess\u00a0up so signifigantly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Her T4 shows she earned about $5,300 last year, but\u00a0her actual salary with the federal government was more than\u00a0$70,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was just pure, utter devastation,&#8221; she said.\u00a0&#8220;I felt like I was having an out-of-body experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CBC News has agreed to protect the woman&#8217;s\u00a0identity because she fears speaking out about her tax issue could put her job in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p>Her case is far from isolated, officials announced yesterday. The government is so far e-issuing about 50,000 tax slips to\u00a0public servants working in Quebec and British Columbia due to two different errors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It comes as federal public service unions are marking the one-year anniversary of the rollout of the\u00a0Phoenix system. An announcement by the unions is expected Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<h2>Government re-issuing tax slips<\/h2>\n<p>Marie Lemay, deputy minister of Public Services and\u00a0Procurement\u00a0Canada, said Wednesday that\u00a0the\u00a0erroneous R1s and T4s in Quebec and B.C.\u00a0&#8220;will not have an impact on employees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/RSSPoster_PRO\/cache\/fa343_marie-lemay-phoenix-tech-briefing-february-22-2017.jpg\" alt=\"Marie Lemay Phoenix tech briefing February 22 2017\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\">Marie Lemay, deputy minister of Public Services and Procurement Canada, says Phoenix is a complex system. (CBC News)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This issue is being rectified and new slips are also being issued for employees before February 28,&#8221; Lemay said at a press conference.<\/p>\n<p>The Conservative critic for\u00a0PSPC, Kelly\u00a0McCauley, said\u00a0the Opposition has to keep putting pressure on Minister Judy Foote\u00a0&#8220;to convince her that this is a serious issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That this is not something that she can just blow away with talking points,&#8221; McCauley told CBC&#8217;s Chris Rands. &#8220;She needs to deal with this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McCauley is encouraging workers with T4 problems to contact their MPs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re continually getting calls into our office every week,&#8221; he said.\u00a0&#8220;People have been trying for months and months on end to get back pay, to get T4s fixed&#8230; We&#8217;re here to help and we&#8217;re going to do our best.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/RSSPoster_PRO\/cache\/fa343_kelly-mccauley-mp.JPG\" alt=\"Kelly McCauley MP\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figure-caption\">Kelly McCauley, the Official Opposition&#8217;s PCPS critic, says he&#8217;s sorry workers are experiencing issues with their tax slips. (CBC News)<\/p>\n<h2>&#8216;It&#8217;s shameful&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>The woman on maternity leave CBC News interviewed has hired an accountant to deal with her pay mess, but said she&#8217;s exhausted and losing hope.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Her pay problems have been going on for a year now. She spends 30 hours a week on the phone dealing with Phoenix while she&#8217;s trying to take care of her newborn.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s shameful. My son is 10 weeks old&#8230; I can&#8217;t\u00a0recall\u00a0a day except for when I had him that I haven&#8217;t been fighting these Phoenix issues,&#8221; she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The employee has gone from being dramatically overpaid\u00a0to having the government claw back\u00a0100 per cent of her maternity leave\u00a0as a repayment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s stressful. You wonder at what you are going to break or you&#8217;re going to be forced into a food bank or handing your keys over to the bank for your house&#8230;&#8221; she said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Canada Revenue Agency has said\u00a0that even if\u00a0T4s are incorrect, public servants\u00a0must still file their taxes on time. The government plans to send\u00a0CRA amended T4s directly\u00a0so workers won&#8217;t have to re-file their taxes.<\/p>\n<p>The woman said she contacted the pay centre to report her T4 issue, as requested.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Have a story to tell?
