{"id":70825,"date":"2017-02-15T18:06:39","date_gmt":"2017-02-15T18:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/government-throws-strong-and-clear-support-for-anti-islamophobia-motion-ahead-of-tonights-debate.html"},"modified":"2017-02-15T18:06:39","modified_gmt":"2017-02-15T18:06:39","slug":"government-throws-strong-and-clear-support-for-anti-islamophobia-motion-ahead-of-tonights-debate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/government-throws-strong-and-clear-support-for-anti-islamophobia-motion-ahead-of-tonights-debate.html","title":{"rendered":"Government throws &#8216;strong and clear&#8217; support for anti-Islamophobia motion ahead of tonight&#8217;s debate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Heritage Minister M\u00e9lanie Joly says the federal government is throwing its &#8220;strong and clear support&#8221; behind\u00a0Liberal MP Iqra Khalid&#8217;s motion condemning Islamophobia.<\/p>\n<p>Surrounded by a number of MPs in the foyer of the House of Commons, Joly\u00a0said there is a need to counter all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is no place for hatred and no tolerance of abuse,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>MPs will begin debate on M-103,\u00a0which was tabled by Khalid in December 2016 and calls on the government to &#8220;recognize the need to quell the increasing public climate of hate and fear,&#8221; at 5:30 p.m. ET today.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Conservatives wrestle with M-103<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">\u200bAnti-Islamophobia motion set for debate<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>M-103 has generated much controversy on social media and through online petitions, with some erroneously calling it a &#8220;law&#8221; or a &#8220;bill&#8221; rather than a non-binding motion. Some have raised concerns that it could lead Canada on a path to Sharia law.<\/p>\n<p>But Khalid insisted Wednesday\u00a0her motion is much broader in scope than one single religion, and said she is glad it has created much dialogue in the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to recognize that we have a problem and we need to tackle it head-on,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Several Conservative leadership <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">candidates have spoken out against the motion,<\/a> arguing that it could curtail\u00a0free speech and that it singles out one religion for protection.
