{"id":64910,"date":"2017-01-27T20:09:00","date_gmt":"2017-01-27T20:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/rcmp-launches-national-awareness-campaign-about-sexual-misconduct-at-work.html"},"modified":"2017-01-27T20:09:00","modified_gmt":"2017-01-27T20:09:00","slug":"rcmp-launches-national-awareness-campaign-about-sexual-misconduct-at-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/rcmp-launches-national-awareness-campaign-about-sexual-misconduct-at-work.html","title":{"rendered":"RCMP launches national awareness campaign about sexual misconduct at work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The RCMP\u00a0has not adequately recognized the interests of its employees who claim they were harassed at work, Commissioner Bob Paulson said in announcing some of the actions taken following an internal\u00a0review released last July.<\/p>\n<p>The review on harassment and sexual harassment in the force\u00a0followed CBC News reports about nudity, allegations of sexual harassment, bullying and other disgraceful conduct\u00a0during work hours at the\u00a0Canadian Police College for bomb technicians.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Oddly, we had not built our responses to internal misconduct to recognize and address the victims&#8217; interests as much as we have in our criminal investigations. No longer!&#8221; Paulson\u00a0says in an\u00a0update posted to the RCMP website.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are also taking steps to make\u00a0sure that\u00a0victims\u00a0of such behaviour are supported and kept well informed on the progress of their cases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Bob Paulson apologizes for &#8216;egregious behaviour,&#8217; nudity at RCMP bomb school<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">RCMP face potential legal roadblock to firing man over police college misconduct<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">External body needed to probe RCMP workplace complaints, senior Mountie says<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The review, led by RCMP assistant commissioner Steve White,\u00a0detailed a\u00a0historically dysfunctional workplace where employees felt they couldn&#8217;t complain about mistreatment without risking retaliation and being labelled &#8220;rats.&#8221; The review team also found a string of &#8220;unacceptable&#8221; failures in the leadership of RCMP management, the disciplinary system and human resources practices.<\/p>\n<p>White and his team made 28 recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>The update says the RCMP has since launched a four-week, national awareness campaign on sexual misconduct in its workplaces. The goals are to educate\u00a0staff about how to spot and report such behaviour, and to explain the consequences.<\/p>\n<p>The Mounties say they have also updated training for managers and those who investigate harassment and misconduct, to better assess employee mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the other recommendations pertain\u00a0to making the disciplinary process more transparent to complainants, witnesses and the public, as well as publicly reporting the outcome of conduct hearings are still in the works.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While more work lies ahead,&#8221; said Paulson, &#8220;I am proud that our efforts have resulted in changes to RCMP policy and training materials to facilitate the reporting of and response to, cases of sexual misconduct.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Article source: http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/rcmp-sexual-misconduct-awareness-police-college-1.3954954?cmp=rss<\/a>\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The RCMP\u00a0has not adequately recognized the interests of its employees who claim they were harassed at work, Commissioner Bob Paulson said in announcing some of the actions taken following an internal\u00a0review released last July.
