In March, an\u00a0advisory panel is set to consider a second measure, revising the\u00a0official label definition of how opioids should \u2014\u00a0and should not \u2014\u00a0be used, officials said.<br \/> \u00a0<br \/> Any revision would affect marketing efforts by\u00a0manufacturers, including privately held Purdue Pharma and\u00a0Pharmascience, as well as publicly traded Teva Pharmaceuticals\u00a0Industries, Mallinckrodt Plc,\u00a0Novartis&#8217;s Sandoz and Johnson  Johnson&#8217;s Janssen\u00a0Pharma.<br \/> \u00a0<br \/> Warning stickers would be a first and could serve as an\u00a0example. In Ontario, the most\u00a0populous province, prescription opioid deaths rose 40 per cent in\u00a0six years; in the western province of Saskatchewan, they more\u00a0than doubled since 2010. (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p> \u00a0<br \/> Philpott has called the opioid epidemic the nation&#8217;s\u00a0greatest public health crisis and pledged to use every tool at\u00a0her disposal to fix it.<br \/> \u00a0<br \/> &#8220;We&#8217;re concerned when opioid prescriptions are on the\u00a0increase,&#8221; she told Reuters. &#8220;We need to understand what&#8217;s\u00a0<br \/> behind that and make wise recommendations.&#8221;<br \/> \u00a0<br \/> Drug companies have said they support measures to increase\u00a0patient safety. Health Canada\u00a0plans to put the warning sticker proposal to focus groups and\u00a0<br \/> gather public comment before Philpott makes a decision.<br \/> \u00a0<br \/> Philpott envisions stickers similar to those pharmacists put\u00a0on pill bottles reminding patients to take a medication with\u00a0<br \/> food. In addition to warning of the risks, she said, they would\u00a0advise patients where to get more information and help if\u00a0<br \/> needed.<\/p>\n<h2>Use for chronic pain not supported: MD<\/h2>\n<p>Rewriting label definitions of evidence-supported opioid\u00a0use would change how drug companies sell opioids in Canada, an\u00a0$881-million-a-year market.<br \/> \u00a0<br \/> Doctors are allowed to prescribe &#8220;off-label,&#8221; tailoring prescriptions to patients&#8217; individual needs. But pharmaceutical\u00a0<br \/> companies must follow the labels&#8217; language in all marketing,\u00a0including advertisements and sales calls on physicians.<br \/> \u00a0<br \/> In an email, spokesman Grant Perry said OxyContin and\u00a0Hydromorph Contin maker Purdue &#8220;supports providing the most\u00a0relevant and up to date information&#8221; to doctors and patients, as\u00a0well as evidence-based updates.<br \/> \u00a0<br \/> Representatives for Mallinckrodt, Teva and Sandoz did not\u00a0respond to Reuters&#8217; queries. Pharmascience representatives did\u00a0not return calls or emails.<br \/> \u00a0<br \/> Spokeswoman Jennifer McCormack said in an email Janssen\u00a0would &#8220;continue to work with Health Canada to help ensure the\u00a0safe and appropriate use&#8221; of prescription opioids and it was\u00a0&#8220;important to carefully balance anti-abuse efforts&#8221; with patient\u00a0needs.<br \/> \u00a0<br \/> In an effort to address Canada&#8217;s drug problem, health\u00a0officials made it more difficult to obtain OxyContin after\u00a0Purdue introduced a tamper-resistant formulation of the drug in\u00a02012.
