{"id":61745,"date":"2017-01-03T10:56:25","date_gmt":"2017-01-03T10:56:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/trump-leaning-toward-georgia-ex-governor-for-agriculture-head-official.html"},"modified":"2017-01-03T10:56:25","modified_gmt":"2017-01-03T10:56:25","slug":"trump-leaning-toward-georgia-ex-governor-for-agriculture-head-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/trump-leaning-toward-georgia-ex-governor-for-agriculture-head-official.html","title":{"rendered":"Trump leaning toward Georgia ex-governor for agriculture head: official"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"article-text\"><br \/>\n<span id=\"midArticle_start\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"article-prime\"><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"articleLocation\">WASHINGTON<\/span> Former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue is U.S. Republican President-elect Donald Trump&#8217;s leading candidate to run the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a senior Trump transition team official said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span id=\"midArticle_0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perdue, a Democrat-turned-Republican who founded a grain and fertilizer business, served on Trump&#8217;s agricultural advisory committee during his presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The official gave no other details about Trump&#8217;s choice for agriculture secretary, one of the few remaining posts Trump has to fill as he assumes the White House on Jan. 20.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_2\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The appointment must be approved by the Republican-led U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_3\" \/><\/p>\n<p>            <span class=\"article-divide first-article-divide\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perdue, 70, led the southern U.S. state for two terms as governor from 2003 to 2011 after previously representing a rural swath of central Georgia about 100 miles south of Atlanta in the state Senate.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_4\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Elected in 2002, he became the state&#8217;s first Republican since 1871, according to the National Governors Association.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_5\" \/><\/p>\n<p>            <span class=\"article-divide second-article-divide\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After finishing his second term as governor, Perdue founded Perdue Partners, a global trading firm that consults and provides services for companies looking to export products. <\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_6\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Trump had been meeting with a number of other possible candidates for U.S. agriculture secretary, including Elsa Murano, undersecretary of agriculture for food safety under President George W.
