Health Canada will announce Thursday that it has approved\u00a0an updated COVID-19\u00a0vaccine targeting the Omicron variant, sources tell Radio-Canada and CBC News.<\/p>\n

Both Pfizer and rival Moderna\u00a0filed applications for vaccine approval.<\/p>\n

Sources, including one\u00a0senior government official,\u00a0told both CBC News and Radio-Canada that\u00a0the Moderna vaccine is the one\u00a0receiving\u00a0approval on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The updated vaccine is a combination\u00a0of two strains, also known as “bivalent” shots. They contain both the original vaccine formulation and protection against the original Omicron variant BA.1, but not the dominant circulating Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration\u00a0authorized its first update to COVID-19 vaccines\u00a0that target BA.4 and BA.5; doses could roll out within days.<\/p>\n

Canada expecting\u00a012 million doses<\/h2>\n

Dr. Supriya Sharma, chief medical adviser at Health Canada, and Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Howard Njoo will attend a morning technical briefing for media at 11 a.m. ET on Thursday.<\/p>\n

That will be followed by a news conference with Health Minister\u00a0Jean-Yves Duclos\u00a0at 2 p.m. ET.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Moderna\u00a0announced last week that it will supply\u00a012 million doses of its COVID-19 shot<\/a>\u00a0adapted to target the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

A Health Canada spokesperson said on Aug. 22 that a decision on Moderna’s\u00a0vaccine was\u00a0expected within weeks.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Pfizer Canada told CBC News Wednesday that its submission to Health Canada for a BA.1-targeted bivalent vaccine is still under review and approval has not yet been granted.<\/p>\n
