Flora Duffy earned the gold medal in the event with a time of 1:55:36.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first Olympic gold medal for Bermuda, which has an\u00a0<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">estimated population<\/a> of 62,034. The country is so small, it only <a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">sent two athletes<\/a> to the Tokyo Games \u2013 Duffy for the triathlon and rower Dara Alizadeh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-twitter-tweet embed--float-none embed--size-small lazyload\" data-require=\"third-party\/twitter-widgets\">\n<\/figure>\n<p>The country&#8217;s first Olympics was Berlin in 1936 and in its <a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">Olympic history,<\/a> it has only taken home one other medal \u2014 boxer Clarence Hill <a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">won a bronze<\/a> in the men&#8217;s 81kg heavyweight competition at the Montreal Games in 1976.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{wordCount:50}\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>With its first gold medal, Bermuda joins a short list of small countries to win gold at the Olympics \u2014 but it&#8217;s still the smallest to do so at the Summer Games.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">Olympics,<\/a> five notable small countries have won gold. Luxembourg, which has an <a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">estimated population<\/a> of 637,177, won gold in the men&#8217;s 1500 in 1952. Suriname, in South America, which has an <a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">estimated population<\/a> of 607,600, won gold in the men&#8217;s 100 butterfly in 1988. Bahamas, which has an <a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">estimated population<\/a> of 381,200, won gold for sailing in 1964. Hidilyn Diaz won the first Olympic\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">gold medal<\/a><\/span>\u00a0for the Philippines on Monday.
