{"id":246447,"date":"2020-12-09T09:11:18","date_gmt":"2020-12-09T09:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/senator-who-posted-anti-indigenous-letters-faces-prospect-of-expulsion-again.html"},"modified":"2020-12-09T09:11:18","modified_gmt":"2020-12-09T09:11:18","slug":"senator-who-posted-anti-indigenous-letters-faces-prospect-of-expulsion-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/senator-who-posted-anti-indigenous-letters-faces-prospect-of-expulsion-again.html","title":{"rendered":"Senator who posted anti-Indigenous letters faces prospect of expulsion again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><\/p>\n<p>Lynn Beyak, the senator who posted derogatory letters about Indigenous people on her website, once again faces the prospect of expulsion from the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate&#8217;s ethics committee recommended in June that Beyak&#8217;s one-year suspension from the upper house be lifted because she had taken anti-racism training and apologized for posting the letters.<\/p>\n<section id=\"inread-wrapper-id-33885170\"><\/section>\n<p>But the Senate was still debating the committee&#8217;s report when it broke for the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Mary Jane McCallum, a member of the Independent Senators Group, said the matter was &#8220;ended prematurely&#8221; with the prorogation of Parliament in August.<\/p>\n<p>She said that has allowed &#8220;the quiet reinstatement&#8221; of Beyak as a senator in good standing, without her colleagues ever deciding whether that should happen.<\/p>\n<p>McCallum has now introduced a motion calling for Beyak&#8217;s expulsion from the chamber.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it is believed that Sen. Beyak has merited her return, she should be entitled to return to the Senate by a decision of her peers, not to simply return because the clock has run out on her suspension,&#8221; McCallum, a First Nations woman of Cree heritage, said in a media statement Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>She described\u00a0the way the Senate has dealt with Beyak\u00a0as\u00a0an example of institutional racism.<\/p>\n<p>The offending letters were posted in response to a 2018 speech in which Beyak argued that residential schools did a lot of good for Indigenous children. Many Indigenous children\u00a0suffered physical and sexual abuse and thousands died of disease and malnutrition at the schools.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH |\u00a0Sen. McCallum gives notice of a motion to expel Lynn Beyak from the Senate<\/h3>\n<p class=\"video-show-name\">\n<p><span class=\"formattedDate video-time-stamp\" aria-label=\"From 12 hours ago\" aria-hidden=\"false\">12 hours ago<\/span><span class=\"a11y\">Video<\/span><span class=\"media-caption\">The motion is expected to be introduced on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday.<!-- --> <!-- -->0:54<\/span><\/span><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>The Senate&#8217;s ethics officer, Pierre Legault, concluded in March 2019 that five of the letters\u00a0contained racist content\u00a0suggesting that Indigenous people are lazy, chronic whiners who are milking the residential-schools issue to get government handouts.<\/p>\n<p>Beyak, who was kicked out of the Conservative caucus over the matter, was suspended without pay from the Senate in May 2019.<\/p>\n<p>She refused for almost a year to delete the letters, presenting herself as a champion of free speech and a victim of political correctness. They were finally deleted from her website by the Senate administration.<\/p>\n<p>She eventually apologized and agreed to take cultural sensitivity training \u2014 but the ethics committee deemed the initial apology to be perfunctory and the training a fiasco.<\/p>\n<p>Beyak&#8217;s suspension ended automatically when Parliament dissolved for last fall&#8217;s federal election.
