{"id":242061,"date":"2020-11-03T00:14:25","date_gmt":"2020-11-03T00:14:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/3-tiny-new-hampshire-towns-traditionally-vote-at-midnight-but-not-this-year.html"},"modified":"2020-11-03T00:14:25","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T00:14:25","slug":"3-tiny-new-hampshire-towns-traditionally-vote-at-midnight-but-not-this-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/3-tiny-new-hampshire-towns-traditionally-vote-at-midnight-but-not-this-year.html","title":{"rendered":"3 tiny New Hampshire towns traditionally vote at midnight, but not this year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"javascript:void(0);\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wordpressdynamos.com\/timesofnewscdn\/USA\/3e23a_image.jpg\" alt=\"Pro-Trump billboard removed in New Hampshire\" \/><span class=\"overlay\">Video<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"title\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">Pro-Trump billboard removed in New Hampshire<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Dave Streit spent $2,600 to display his &#8216;Trump Country&#8217; ad; joins &#8216;Fox amp; Friends&#8217; with reaction<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Three tiny <a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">New Hampshire<\/a> towns &#8212; Dixville Notch, Millsfield and Hart&#8217;s Location &#8212; have traditionally cast their ballots at midnight on\u00a0<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">Election Day<\/a>, but the <a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">coronavirus<\/a>\u00a0pandemic has put a damper on the usual festivities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable\">Dixville Notch is set to continue its 60-year midnight voting tradition\u00a0and Millsfield will stand by its tradition, but Hart&#8217;s Location changed its ways in the wake of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a hard thing to let go of,&#8221; <a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">said <\/a>Mark Dindorf, chairman of the Hart&#8217;s Location Board of Selectmen. &#8220;Really, during a pandemic, we didn&#8217;t see that there was any way to conduct it safely with the health and safety of our poll workers and voters involved,&#8221; Dindorf added.<\/p>\n<p>The 48 voters from Hart&#8217;s Location will go to the polls instead from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Town Hall.<\/p>\n<p>The 22 registered voters of Millsfield will stand by the tradition.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have the room to do it here,&#8221; said Millsfield election coordinator Wayne Urso. &#8220;We can do it safely, and that&#8217;s exactly what we&#8217;re going to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This year, we have far fewer voting booths,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We want to make sure that the booths are the right distance from each other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner expects a record number of ballots to be cast in Tuesday\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p>Gardner on Monday predicted at least 800,000 ballots would be cast, topping the record of 755,850 set in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t be shocked if we had tens of thousands more than that, but I\u2019m being conservative,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The first Election Day\u00a0vote to be cast at a polling place\u00a0is expected to be\u00a0to Les Otten, of Dixville Notch, a lifelong Republican\u00a0who is voting for Democratic presidential nominee\u00a0<a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">Joe Biden<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t agree with him on a lot of issues, but I believe it\u2019s time to find what unites us as opposed to what divides us,\u201d Otten <a href=\"javascript:void(0);\">said<\/a>. \u201cThe things that unite us are what makes this country great. As of Monday morning, more than 244,000 absentee ballots had been requested and more than 223,000 had been returned to city and town clerks.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple safety precautions \u2014 masks, gloves, plexiglass barriers \u2014 will be in place for those who vote in person Tuesday.
