Supreme Court judge <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">granted<\/a> Coastal GasLink\u00a0an injunction against protestors who had blocked access to the project inside their territory.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter issued to Coastal GasLink representatives, hereditary chiefs with the First Nation wrote\u00a0all staff and contractors must leave the territory immediately.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Coastal GasLink\u00a0is in violation of\u00a0Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en\u00a0law, and it is our responsibility now to uphold\u00a0Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en\u00a0law to maintain the integrity of our territories for future generations,&#8221; the letter reads.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>  <span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\">\n<p>All CGL workers have now been peacefully evicted from Unist&#8217;ot&#8217;en amp; Gidimt&#8217;en territories.brbrUnder the authority of Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en law and of the hereditary chiefs of all five clans, we are standing up for the last of our lands and we need you to stand with us. a href=&#8221;https:\/\/t.co\/EFoR8RYNDw&#8221;pic.twitter.com\/EFoR8RYNDw\/a<\/p>\n<p>mdash;<a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">@UnistotenCamp<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>Upon receiving the eviction notice, Na&#8217;Moks said employees of Coastal GasLink initially reacted with &#8220;arrogance and entitlement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But it was explained to them that we are peacefully there,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We witnessed them leaving, because we were staying there until they did. Then they left, and it was peaceful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We sang our songs and drummed and wished them well. These are employees, but we needed to let the decision-makers know that we do not agree with them\u00a0\u2014 we follow our law.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The site has remained vacant since the notice was served, and Na&#8217;Moks said no word has yet been received from RCMP or Coastal GasLink representatives regarding whether or not the eviction will be respected.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"pullquote\"><p><span class=\"text-items\"><span class=\"pullquote-quotation\">We needed to let the decision-makers know that we do not agree with them\u00a0\u2014 we follow our law.<\/span><cite class=\"pullquote-source\">&#8211; Na&#8217;Moks,\u00a0Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en hereditary chief<\/cite><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;We do expect them to meet and discuss things. They&#8217;re working hand-in-hand,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We&#8217;re open to meeting with them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CBC News requested comment from British Columbia RCMP and representatives from Coastal GasLink but did not receive a response Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Construction on the $6.6-billion Coastal GasLink project started in January 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The pipeline is owned by Calgary-based TC Energy, which agreed to sell a 65 per cent stake in the project to private investment firm KKR and the Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) last month. The sale is expected to close later this year.<\/p>\n<h2>Expecting further police action<\/h2>\n<p>The Dec. 31 injunction effectively restrained protestors from barring workers from getting through checkpoints and allowed RCMP to enforce that ruling.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"><strong>B.C. Supreme Court grants injunction against Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en protesters in pipeline standoff<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s developments are likely to exacerbate the dispute, but Na&#8217;Moks\u00a0said\u00a0Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en\u00a0law\u00a0\u2014 to protect land, people and culture\u00a0\u2014 dictated this move had to be taken.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need them to understand that what they are doing is destroying our lands, our ecological sites, our burial sites,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They have no comprehension of how important it is to our people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>  <span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"imageMedia image full\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wordpressdynamos.com\/timesofnewscdn\/USA\/78150_gidimt-en-checkpoint-jan-7.JPG\" \/><figcaption class=\"image-caption\">On Jan. 7, 2019, RCMP enforced an injunction ordering people to stop preventing Coastal GasLink workers from accessing a road and bridge. Fourteen people arrested that day have had contempt proceedings dropped.<!-- --> <!-- -->(Chantelle Bellrichard\/CBC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>Fourteen people were arrested in January 2019 when RCMP enforced a court injunction handed down by the same court, drawing international attention.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"><strong>Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en arrests spark debate about Indigenous relations with RCMP<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In December, the U.K. newspaper The Guardian reported\u00a0RCMP had argued for &#8220;lethal overwatch&#8221; of the site, according to notes from what was described as a RCMP strategy session.<\/p>\n<p>RCMP were prepared to shoot the activists if necessary, according to The Guardian&#8217;s reporting, and were instructed to use &#8220;as much violence towards the gate as you want.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>CBC has not independently verified those documents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"><strong>Reports of RCMP snipers dispatched to Wet&#8217;suwet&#8217;en blockade &#8216;concerning,&#8217; says Indigenous Services minister<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"imageMedia image full\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wordpressdynamos.com\/timesofnewscdn\/USA\/b9dcd_houston-arrests.JPG\" \/><figcaption class=\"image-caption\">Tensions over a proposed pipeline on disputed Indigenous land led to 14 arrests in January 2019.<!-- --> <!-- -->(Chantelle Bellrichard\/CBC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>When asked whether he was concerned about a similar situation unfolding after the eviction, Na&#8217;Moks said his side would be peaceful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In January, we were the peaceful ones. We were the ones being invaded. That&#8217;s we will continue to be,&#8221; he said.\u00a0&#8220;I&#8217;m sure they are all meeting today to plan their next steps\u00a0\u2026\u00a0Everything they do is premeditated.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ll do it our way, make sure it&#8217;s peaceful. We have nothing to hide.
