Former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions spoke at Northwestern University<\/a> in Illinois<\/a> on Tuesday night \u2013 despite attempts by protesters to disrupt the event, according to reports.<\/p>\n

Video posted online shows protesters trying to enter the building from a rear entrance \u2013 until a group of police officers<\/a> intervenes.<\/p>\n

Afterward, photos posted online showed the former U.S. senator from Alabama<\/a> being escorted from the building by security officers.<\/p>\n

Numerous appearances by conservative speakers on the nation\u2019s college campuses have been disrupted or postponed in recent years amid what\u2019s come to be called \u201ccancel culture\u201d \u2013 the efforts by some groups to silence any speakers with whom they disagree.<\/p>\n

Sessions\u2019 speech, titled \u201cThe Real Meaning of the Trump Agenda,\u201d was sponsored by Northwestern\u2019s College Republicans, whose decision to invite the former Trump Cabinet member was debated on campus for weeks.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, an informal poll taken Monday by campus publication North by Northwestern found that 90 percent of respondents thought Sessions should be allowed to speak on campus.<\/p>\n

But one student, identified as Zachery Novicoff, said he didn\u2019t believe Sessions should be welcome.<\/p>\n

Prior to Tuesday\u2019s event, protesters gathered outside the building, with signs such as \u201cSessions is a Traitor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sessions, 72, represented Alabama in the U.S. Senate for two decades before being tapped by President Trump in 2017 to head the U.S. Justice Department as attorney general. <\/p>\n

Although Sessions was an early supporter of Trump\u2019s presidential campaign, their relationship soured when Sessions decided to recuse himself from the investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.<\/p>\n

Sessions also became a lightning rod for criticism after implementing a \u201czero-tolerance\u201d policy on immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border that led to widely criticized family separations. The policy was later rescinded.<\/p>\n

Sessions ultimately resigned as attorney general last November and is said to be considering a run for a return to the U.S. Senate next year \u2013 although reportedly without the blessing of President Trump.<\/p>\n

Earlier Tuesday, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., sounded unconvinced that a Senate run would be a good idea for Sessions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I like Jeff. I thought he was a great senator,\u201d Graham told reporters. \u201cBut the whole campaign will be about what Trump said about Sessions. And I can just imagine that can be kind of ugly.\u201d<\/p>\n
