{"id":192137,"date":"2019-11-02T00:14:53","date_gmt":"2019-11-02T00:14:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/premiers-talk-strategy-for-dealing-with-liberal-minority-in-a-divided-country.html"},"modified":"2019-11-02T00:14:53","modified_gmt":"2019-11-02T00:14:53","slug":"premiers-talk-strategy-for-dealing-with-liberal-minority-in-a-divided-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usa.timesofnews.com\/breaking-news\/political\/premiers-talk-strategy-for-dealing-with-liberal-minority-in-a-divided-country.html","title":{"rendered":"Premiers talk strategy for dealing with Liberal minority in a divided country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s provincial and territorial leaders spoke on the phone Friday for the first time since the federal election to discuss how they would approach relations with the new Liberal minority government.<\/p>\n<p>Premiers discussed a range of policy\u00a0issues, including mental health and addictions, trade, equalization and environmental assessments for major resource projects.<\/p>\n<section id=\"inread-wrapper-id-31045430\"><\/section>\n<p>The call was convened by Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, who is currently the chair of the Council of the Federation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, I was pleased to chair a conference call with fellow premiers,&#8221; said Moe. &#8220;As premiers, we recognize the importance of continued engagement at the COF table.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The narrow election result has been driving talk of regional fractures within Canada, stoked by the return of the separatist Bloc Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois\u00a0and growing signs of <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">western alienation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Working with provinces presents challenge for Trudeau<\/h2>\n<p>Relations with the provinces may prove to be one of the most challenging issues for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau&#8217;s government,\u00a0given that the Liberals were elected <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">without winning a single seat in Alberta<\/a> and <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">Saskatchewan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both provinces\u00a0have criticized Ottawa for failing to get the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion built.\u00a0Trudeau also is being pressed by Alberta\u00a0Premier Jason Kenney and\u00a0Premier Moe to scrap the carbon tax and <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">revamp the equalization system <\/a>as first steps toward improving relations with Western Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the CBC&#8217;s <em>Power and Politics<\/em>, Premier Kenney said he&#8217;s trying to build a consensus among provinces to stand up to the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve placed a great emphasis on trying to\u00a0&#8230; find allies amongst other provincial governments whose interests are aligned with ours here in the West,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kenney said opposing Bill C-69, legislation passed by the Trudeau government earlier this year that created a new environmental\u00a0assessment regime, is one of those interests.<\/p>\n<p>He said nine out of 10 provinces, and two out of the three territories, are opposed to Bill C-69.<\/p>\n<h2>Provincial\u00a0and territorial divisions<\/h2>\n<p>But there are\u00a0plenty of divisions among the premiers themselves.<\/p>\n<p>B.C. Premier John Horgan\u00a0told CBC News he agreed with Ontario\u00a0Premier Doug Ford when he expressed his support during the call for increasing\u00a0immigration to their provinces\u00a0\u2014 an issue on which Quebec\u00a0Premier\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois Legault\u00a0is <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">moving in the opposite direction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And the issue of pipelines <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">pits Quebec<\/a> and B.C. against Alberta and Saskatchewan.<\/p>\n<p>Horgan said the Trans Mountain pipeline project \u2014 a major<a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"> point of contention between Alberta and B.C.<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 did not come up during the call.<\/p>\n<p>The premiers did agree to organize a face-to-face meeting with each other by the end of the year before seeking a First Ministers&#8217; meeting with the prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The consensus around the table was we needed to meet together ourselves first to talk about those areas of common interest and those areas where we might have divides,&#8221;\u00a0Horgan said.<\/p>\n<p>Kenney said they&#8217;re looking at a date &#8220;later this month.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Article source: https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/premiers-conference-call-divided-country-1.5345383?cmp=rss<\/a>\r\n<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Canada&#8217;s provincial and territorial leaders spoke on the phone Friday for the first time since the federal election to discuss how they would approach relations with the new Liberal minority government.
