But if an ongoing outbreak in New York state continues into next month, the U.S. could lose its &#8220;measles-free&#8221; status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"speakable-p-2 p-text\">&#8220;As a global leader in public health, it is mortifying that (the U.S.)\u00a0may lose its measles elimination status,&#8221;\u00a0said\u00a0Dr. Paul Spiegel, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Humanitarian Health. &#8220;The measles outbreaks should not have occurred as vaccination against measles is very effective.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The U.S. isn&#8217;t\u00a0alone. Four countries \u2014 Albania, Greece, the Czech Republic\u00a0and the United Kingdom \u2014 recently lost their measles elimination status, which the World Health Organization defines\u00a0as the absence of continuous disease transmission for greater than 12 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The U.S. would\u00a0immediately lose its elimination status if\u00a0there is any\u00a0case connected to the current\u00a0outbreak on or after Oct. 2, according to\u00a0CDC spokeswoman Kristen Nordlund. If there&#8217;s a case\u00a0that was not transmitted through\u00a0the current outbreak, however, then\u00a0the U.S. would not lose elimination status.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>Measles cases surpass 1,000 in 6 months: <\/strong>Medical experts worry<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>US sees 400 reported cases of measles: <\/strong>What are states doing about it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/immunization\/newsroom\/measles-data-2019\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reported cases worldwide rose by 300 percent<\/a> in the first three months of 2019, compared to the same period in 2018, according to preliminary data from the WHO. And that&#8217;s likely an underestimate: WHO estimates that less than 1 in 10 cases are reported globally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cRe-establishment of measles transmission is concerning. In 2017, about 110,000 people died from measles,\u00a0mostly children under the age of 5 years.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\">Three outbreaks ongoing in the US<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p-text\">This year, the U.S. has seen its highest number of reported cases\u00a0since 1992. There were 1,241\u00a0individual measles\u00a0cases confirmed\u00a0 across\u00a031 states from Jan. 1 to Sept.\u00a05, according to CDC.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Only two states \u2014 New York and Texas \u2014 are currently experiencing outbreaks (defined as three\u00a0or more cases). The nation&#8217;s largest outbreak this year, concentrated in Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods of New York City, ended earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">But<a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/cases-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0three\u00a0others are ongoing<\/a>: in El Paso, Texas, and in New York&#8217;s Rockland\u00a0and Wyoming\u00a0counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>Measles outbreak: <\/strong>As students head back to school, officials warn about risks<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>Measles in Ohio: <\/strong>State reports first case in two years amid national outbreak<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">More than 75% of the cases reported\u00a0this year are linked to outbreaks in New York. They\u00a0<a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/cases-outbreaks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can be traced back to\u00a0travelers<\/a> who brought measles from other countries such as Israel, Ukraine\u00a0and the Philippines, where large measles outbreaks are occurring, CDC says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Measles is a one of the world&#8217;s most contagious viruses. What starts as a mere fever can cause serious health complications and even death. CDC <a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/parents-top4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">estimates<\/a> that about 1 in 5 people in the U.S. who get measles will be hospitalized, and 1 to 3 out of 1,000 will die.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\">Why is measles back?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The global resurgence has been\u00a0fueled in part by the anti-vaccination movement. While the measles vaccine\u00a0is 97% effective, most\u00a0cases in the U.S. this year have occurred among people who were not vaccinated, CDC says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">Proponents of the movement push <a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2010\/may\/24\/mmr-doctor-andrew-wakefield-struck-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the discredited theory<\/a> that the MMR vaccine, administered to children, causes\u00a0autism. Celebrity anti-vaxxers and social media campaigns have continued to champion this\u00a0viral theory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cProbably the No. 1 factor we have to fight is misinformation, this concept some people have that vaccines are dangerous,&#8221; Judd Hultquist, assistant professor of infectious diseases at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, told USA TODAY earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>Vaccines not linked to autism: <\/strong>Facts you can throw at anti-vaxxers<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>Viral misinformation: <\/strong>Rise of &#8216;anti-vaxxer&#8217; movement requires news literacy inoculation<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">This year, New York City bore the brunt of that misinformation campaign, which targeted Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods. In April, Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency\u00a0and required\u00a0unvaccinated people living in designated ZIP codes to receive the vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>CLOSE<\/p>\n<p class=\"video-desc\" itemprop=\"description\">\n    NYC has declared a health emergency over a measles outbreak and ordered mandatory vaccinations for people who may have been exposed. (April 9)<br \/>\n    <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The city&#8217;s health commissioner Oxiris Barbot said at the time\u00a0that the outbreak was &#8220;driven by a small group of anti-vaxxers&#8221; in the targeted neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">&#8220;They have been spreading dangerous misinformation based on fake science,\u201d she said. \u201cWe stand with the majority of people in this community who have worked hard to protect their children and those at risk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The best way forward is to launch a &#8220;robust response to the anti-vaccine empire,&#8221; said Dr. Peter Hotez, professor\u00a0of Pediatrics and Dean for the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">\u201cWe need to take aggressive steps to restore vaccine confidence and vaccine acceptance,&#8221; Hotez said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\"><span class=\"exclude-from-newsgate\"><strong>Meghan McCain goes after anti-vaxxers: <\/strong>Slams\u00a0&#8216;stupidity&#8217; for endangering children<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2\">How can the US regain elimination status?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"p-text\">To requalify for elimination\u00a0status, the U.S. would need to demonstrate that there was no continuous measles transmission in the country for at least a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">According to authorities in New York&#8217;s Rockland County, <a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"http:\/\/rocklandgov.com\/departments\/health\/press-releases\/2018-press-releases\/health-department-alerts-residents-of-confirmed-measles-case-in-\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the outbreak began<\/a> when an international traveler who had\u00a0measles flew through Newark Liberty International Airport on Sept. 28, 2018, potentially exposing others to measles from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1.\u00a0<a data-track-label=\"inline|intext|n\/a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orangecountygov.com\/DocumentCenter\/View\/11457\/New-102218-NYSDOH-Health-Advisory-Measles-Exposures-in-New-York-State-PDF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reports of rash onset<\/a>\u00a0in the county began on Oct. 1, 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text\">The ongoing outbreaks in El Paso and Wyoming County began later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p-text p-text-last\" id=\"article-body-p-last\">Nordlund said the CDC plans\u00a0to\u00a0publish\u00a0a webpage on elimination status sometime next week.<\/p>\n<p>CLOSE<\/p>\n<p class=\"video-desc\" itemprop=\"description\">\n    With this year&#8217;s U.S. measles epidemic now surpassing a 25-year-old record, experts say it&#8217;s not clear when the wave of illnesses will subside and are calling on parents of unvaccinated children to get their kids vaccinated against the disease.
