Washington’s “hyper-partisan” atmosphere is getting in the way of meaningful progress on approving a pathway to citizenship<\/a> for Dreamers, Tulsi Gabbard said.<\/p>\n

Rep. Gabbard, D-Hawaii, reacted to the Democrat-led House passing the Dream and Promise Act<\/a>, which would protect people covered<\/a> by the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals\u00a0(DACA)<\/a> program, in an interview Wednesday on “The Story<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

Gabbard, a 2020 Democratic presidential candidate<\/a>, claimed the stark political divide\u00a0is holding back Congress’ ability to help affected individuals receive a pathway to citizenship.<\/p>\n

“The\u00a0hyper-partisanship around this issue has gotten in\u00a0the way of delivering a real\u00a0solution,” she said. “This legislation and finding a\u00a0solution for these Dreamers is\u00a0something that has had\u00a0bipartisan support.”<\/p>\n

The Army veteran added Dreamers and DACA recipients are being unfairly treated through no fault of their own.<\/p>\n

“This bill, passed with bipartisan\u00a0support, seeks to address a\u00a0deeply concerning issue about\u00a0how people were brought here into\u00a0this country as children with no\u00a0choice of their own [and] have been living in fear and\u00a0uncertainty with no path towards\u00a0a future.”<\/p>\n

She said those affected know only of their life in the U.S. and therefore should be treated better than they are.<\/p>\n

“These people who have known no\u00a0other country than the United\u00a0States of America as their home, should have the opportunity to\u00a0earn their citizenship.\u00a0This bill provides the path to\u00a0do that.”<\/p>\n

Despite a veto threat from\u00a0President Trump<\/a>, House\u00a0Democrats<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday passed the Dream and Promise Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 237-187 vote\u00a0elicited chants of “Si Se Puede” or “Yes We Can”\u00a0in the chamber. The measure is not likely to succeed in the GOP-led Senate, where other pieces of legislation advanced by Democrats\u00a0on issues like\u00a0gun control<\/a>,\u00a0healthcare<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0climate change<\/a>\u00a0have languished in recent years.<\/p>\n

Seven Republicans voted to support the bill, while all 187 “no” votes came from Republicans.<\/p>\n
