The new “Spider-Man: Far From Home” trailer catches up with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) in a world needing new heroes after “Avengers: Endgame.”
The darkness of “Avengers: Endgame” has passed. Peter Parker (Tom Holland) starts web-swinging again in “Spider-Man: Far from Home.”
The second solo Spider-Man for Holland after 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming” has his Parker leaving the country, and eager to make romantic headway with MJ (Zendaya) during a class trip to Europe.
But Parker is pulled back into world-saving along with longtime comic-book rival Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal.
While “Far from Home” opens July 2, the first social reactions from critics spun out Thursday, ahead of the full reviews, which will hit on June 27.
So far, the reactions have been overwhelmingly positive.
‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ trailer: What happens after ‘Avengers: Endgame’
USA TODAY’s Brian Truitt didn’t love it as much as 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” but praised the film as a “fun ode to teen romance.”
“It’s still a rad take on bearing the weight of great expectations and a fun ode to teen romance. Tom Holland continues to be amazing,” Truitt tweeted, giving a shout-out to the ensemble cast. “Zendaya’s MJ is just as cool as (‘Black Panther’s) Shuri and Jake G’s an inspired choice for Mysterio.”
Kevin Polowy, Yahoo Entertainment senior correspondent, called the movie “a fun ride, especially the second half.”
Fandango.com managing editor Erik Davis praised the Marvel film “funny, exciting, romantic, goofy” and called it a “brilliant ground-level look at Spidey’s world how the events of #AvengersEndgame impacted everyday life.”
Mike Ryan, an entertainment writer for Uproxx, tweeted that he “absolutely loved ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home.’ ”
“I’m a huge Mysterio fan and Gyllenhaal nails him,” Ryan wrote. “Also the movie is very clever (and funny) how it handles the fallout post ‘Endgame’ in explaining how this world works now.”

CinemaBlend managing director Sean O’Connell called the movie “jaw-dropping,” especially the second half which he referred to as “EXTRAORDINARY, delivering the BEST Spidey action ever. Most SHOCKING ending in a Spider-Man movie ever. Fans will flip out!”
Gizmodo entertainment reporter Germain Lussier said the movie made him “smile from start to finish.” He praised “the way it builds off ‘Endgame’ to dive deeper into Peter’s emotions.”
“Mysterio also rules,” he said in the tweet. “I can’t wait to see it again.”
“Good Day Chicago” entertainment reporter Jake Hamilton gave his effusive take, calling it a “must-see.”
Hamilton tweeted that the movie starts good “and turns great with every minute that passes — leading to one of the best climaxes of any solo Marvel movie. Tom Holland is, and will forever be, the greatest Spider-Man ever.”
My thoughts on SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME:
A movie that starts out good and turns great with every minute that passes — leading to one of the best climaxes of any solo Marvel movie.
Tom Holland is, and will forever be, the greatest Spider-Man ever.
This movie is a MUST SEE. pic.twitter.com/lTGf4F5ftq
