'Game of Thrones' fans put Jon Snow in the doghouse for abandoning his direwolf, Ghost

CLOSE

Spoiler Alert: These are the 3 biggest moments from “Game of Thrones” Season 8, Episode 4.
USA TODAY

Missandei’s execution at the hands of Cersei and the Mountain wasn’t the only thing that left “Game of Thrones” viewers howling Sunday night. They’re also accusing Jon Snow (Kit Harington) of being a bad dog dad to Ghost, his direwolf and loyal companion since the series’ 2011 premiere.

Although Ghost had popped up before, during and after the Battle of Winterfell, Jon oddly didn’t interact with him. And then, as Jon was preparing to ride south to King’s Landing with Daenerys the morning after the big celebratory feast, he asked pal Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) to take Ghost north of the wall with him, saying “that’s where he belongs, too,” adding, “A direwolf has no place in the south.”

Jon may be correct in saying that the very furry Ghost would be happier “up there” than in the warmer climes of the capital, but the way he handled it was ice-cold. Really, he couldn’t even manage a goodbye head-pat or belly-scratch before jumping on his horse?

‘Game of Thrones’:Why fans are livid over the latest death

That’s how he says goodbye to the animal who accompanied him to Castle Black when he joined the Night’s Watch? Who watched over him and Sam while they slept? Who alerted Jon about the black-brother-turned-wight in time to save Lord Commander Jeor Mormont’s life. Who stood watch over Jon’s dead body before Melisandre gave him his resurrection sponge bath in Season 6? Who just lost an ear fighting the dead for him? How’s that for gratitude?

And so fans let Jon have it.

“Jon should be stabbed in the heart a second time for not even petting Ghost,” @someduudee proposed in a NSFW tweet. “What an (expletive). Ghost saved him on so many occasions.”

“Did Jon really just leave Ghost without telling him he’s a good boy?” asked @Maxim1llion. “He really is a bastard, huh?”

“Ghost watching as Jon rides off to fight Cersei without so much as a “good boy” after fighting the dead for him,” sniffed @TrevorsCanary.

“OK Cersei is ruthless,” @adriadamo wrote, “but Jon looking at Ghost and WALKING AWAY”

“Give me Ghost over a dragon any day,” proclaimed @KingRobbStark.

@lbro2g also accused Jon of ditching Ghost for a dragon, which he doesn’t even have anymore after Euron Greyjoy shot down Rhaegal: “He got a couple of rides in a dragon and puff, he let go of ghost. Well news flash for ya John, ya dragon is gone.”

@redgoldreign read Jon the riot act Tyra Banks-style.

“WTF is up with you, Aegon Tartootipuff?” @StingLikeUhBee demanded, mocking Jon’s real name. “Doesn’t the bestis most loyal boi deserve at least a smile from you? He deserved better. We love you Ghost!!”

@TotalFrankMove_ pictured a lonely Ghost on the long ride north.

While @4eyedRaven imagined him getting his revenge.

Fans will recall Jon was the one who argued way back in Episode 1 that the direwolves were meant for the Stark children, given they are the house’s sigil.

When  Ned Stark (Sean Bean), agreed they could keep them, he issued the following conditions: “You will train them yourselves, you will feed them yourselves, and if they die, you will bury them yourselves.”

Not, as @KennyPowersYank pointed out, “Give them away after they risked their lives protecting you over, and over, and over again. Ghost deserved better.”
