Angry mob ties mayor to back of truck, drags him through town

CLOSE

At least 11 men were arrested after an angry mob tied a mayor to the back of a truck and dragged him through town Tuesday, prosecutors in southern Mexico said.

The violent incident occurred in Las Margaritas in the Mexican state of Chiapas early Tuesday when a group of 50 demonstrators arrived at a government building, demanding money for municipal projects, state Attorney General Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca said in a statement.

The men who were arrested damaged part of the government building and assaulted Mayor Jorge Luis Escandón Hernández, the attorney general’s office said.

A video shared on social media of the incident shows a large group exiting the building, and fights break out as some get into the bed of a truck. Another video shows what appears to be the same truck dragging a man tied to the back through a street past a large crowd.

The protesters came from the nearby community of Santa Rita, the attorney general’s statement says. The mayor was recovered safely and not hurt badly in the assault, the attorney general’s office said.

“Free demonstration is guaranteed in Chiapas, as long as it is peaceful, but we will not tolerate or generate impunity for any criminal behavior,” Llaven Abarca said.
