Actor Channing Tatum has been attached to the movie since it was announced back in 2014, but he’s about the only element of the movie that has remained consistent since then. Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Doug Liman (American Made) were both attached to the movie to direct, but Gore Verbinski was recently confirmed to helm the movie. Simon Kinberg and Zak Penn, both of whom have worked extensively in the X-Men cinematic universe, are currently set to write the movie.
Like Deadpool before him, Gambit is a fan-favorite X-Men character who has previously only appeared on film in the disappointing X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The character started life as a member of a theives’ guild and has his alliance questioned many times throughout his comic-book life. Hopefully, Gambit will give its titular character the same redemption Deadpool gave the Merc with a Mouth.
Gambit hits theaters on February 14, 2019.
