Face ID didn’t fail on the iPhone X, it worked perfectly

No one has seen Apple give a real demonstration of Face ID yet. That’s because an embarrassing mishap occurred during the iPhone X event earlier this week. It looked as if the facial recognition technology failed completely; however, it wasn’t a matter of not recognizing the user.

Apple’s Craig Federighi picks up an iPhone X and attempts to unlock it using Face ID. The phone, however, doesn’t appear to be analyzing his face. That’s because too many attempts were made before the presentation and thus the iPhone X in Federighi’s hands only offered passcode entry.

An Apple spokesperson provided this explanation:

“People were handling the device for stage demo ahead of time and didn’t realize Face ID was trying to authenticate their face. After failing a number of times, because they weren’t Craig, the iPhone did what it was designed to do, which was require his passcode. Face ID worked as it was designed to.”

There you have it. Apple didn’t actually watch a key feature fail to work properly in a live demo. Since the iPhone X had too many attempts, it defaulted to another method to be unlocked. So Apple’s $999 phone did exactly what it should’ve done.
