The Flash goes to marriage counseling in season 4

At the end of The Flash season 3, Barry Allen faced down his greatest enemy yet: himself. Except from the future. And evil. In season 3, one of Barry’s obstacles will be a lot closer to home and much simpler: his relationship with Iris.

When Barry stepped into the Speed Force to save Central City from earthquakes and Flash-colored lightning, he left Iris standing alone, looking hopeless. When season 4 starts, she’s still coping with it but has stepped up to take charge of Team Flash in the meantime. When Barry returns, this causes friction between the two.

“Barry and Iris keep comically clashing inadvertently because she’s used to being in charge, and he’s used to being in charge, and so they wind up going to couples therapy to work through it,” said executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. But you don’t have to worry about the show turning into some NBC primetime drama.

“The two of them with the therapist is some of the funniest stuff we’ve ever done on this show,” Kreisberg continued, adding that “it also leads to a deepening of [Barry and Iris’] relationship.”

While Barry has been out of the picture, Iris has bonded with Team Flash’s own ex-supervillain Caitlin Snow.

“Caitlin has been through so much herself in relationships, and if anyone can offer advice, it’s her,” Candice Patton told EW. “She’s there quite often to give Iris advice on her relationship with Barry and how to move forward.”
