Samsung can now test out self-driving cars in California

Samsung has successfully acquired a permit to begin testing self-driving technology in California.

The news comes from the Testing of Autonomous Vehicles program from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Samsung is now the 39th company to acquire the permit in California, joining other major tech companies like Apple, Waymo and Tesla, as well as many car companies including BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Ford, and Honda.

Samsung is known for its smartphones, but it’s a giant conglomerate that dabbles in a little bit of everything—TVs, appliances, and more.

In gaining the permit, Samsung now can test out vehicles with its own self-driving technology. In 2015, Samsung started a new division with a focus on self-driving tech. Earlier this year, Samsung got similar approval to test out self-driving technology in its native South Korea using modified Hyundai vehicles. Now, it’s expanding to the U.S.

Samsung is focusing its self-driving technology on sensors and software, leaving up the development of cars to manufacturers. That’s the same approach Apple decided to take after it scrapped its car project and shifted focus to sensors and software.
