A lot of us probably grew up playing Earthworm Jim. It was a game that captured the spirit of the 90s, baking gross humor into a visual aesthetic that I’d put close to Ren Stimpy.
The thing about the Earthworm Jim series, though, is that it arrived with a lot of extra baggage that’s plagued it for years. The franchise came to life well enough, but attempts to revive it over the last decade and longer have gone awry.

Then there’s the whole issue of separating art from artist, which some people have a harder time doing than others. The creator, Doug TenNapel, found his work steeped in social-political drama, most recently as he Kickstarted Armikrog. His politics and views have been a sticking point for the gaming community, and that’s drug Earthworm Jim down into the muck, too.
Good thing Jim doesn’t mind slop and goop, I suppose.
I have fond memories of the original Earthworm Jim. Even as a kid I found its platforming and controls problematic, but I remember liking the game more than hating it. I’m not sure how a modern entry in the franchise would do now, though. Is that something you’d want to play?
