Keep in mind that The NPD Group does measure digital sales, but only for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Nintendo’s digital figures are not represented, meaning Splatoon 2 sold a hell of a lot of cartridges.
In fact, the success of games like Final Fantasy XII, NieR: Automata, Nioh, and Persona 5 have boosted the RPG genre in general, and The NPD Group claims RPG sales have risen 50 percent on the year in terms of sales. Good job Atlus, Bandai Namco, and Square Enix!
The NPD Group hints that the PlayStation 4 combined with the Nintendo Switch to take a majority of the hardware sales in July, meaning that the two consoles are running a tight race at the moment. The PlayStation 4 is still in the lead overall for the year, but that comes with a three-month head start over the Switch. Plus, it is also not suffering from insufferable shortages.
